Airforce question***Pros and Cons of Airfield Mangement Job(1C7X1)?

My wife is leaving for AF basic July 14th and got her number one job pic in Airfield Mangement. Can someone with experience or knowledge of this MOS tell us pros and cons or anything else? Thanks***10 POINTS***

Pros:
1. Stationed anywhere there is an airfield, which is most AF bases.
2. Fast-paced, interesting work.
3. A blast doing runway checks after an in-flight emergency. Think of taking a 2 mile long runway at close to 100 MPH.
4. Get to meet LOTS of interesting folks. I did a number of years in Base Ops and knew every General in the Air Force, a chunk of Senators and Congressmen, and met 2 Presidents personally.
5. Get to play "traffic cop" on the flightline. (Issuing a citation to a Sky Cop for speeding on the flightline will make your day!)
Cons:
1. Rotating shifts are the norm at most locations. 3 Days, 3 Swings, 3 Off, 3 Mids, 3 Days, 3 Off is a common schedule at 24/7 locations.
2. Can be high pressure and high stress. Places like Andrews AFB are pressure cookers around the clock with Air Force One to deal with. Others come in fits and starts.
3. If you screw up on the job, EVERYONE will know about it.
4. Loading flight plans into the system is BORING. And you HAVE to be FAST. And ICAO (International) flight plans will leave you muttering to yourself.
5. Dealing with a continuous string of pilots, virtually all of them officers, who always want you to bend the rules "just this once" can be trying. You'll become a diplomat in VERY short order.
6. If you are stationed in Europe, dealing with European Flow Control out of Brussels will drive you nucking futs. |
