Once your enlistment is up, its not necessarily illegal to become a mercenary. The countries were you end up as a mercenary may arrest you (Or kill you, depending).
You risk your US Citizenship if you swear allegiance to any foriegn power (WIth the exception of the countries that allow dual US citizenship). |

If you're talking about the Contractor groups then not only is it not illegal, but they're comprised almost completely of former military. Specifically operators from the SF, SEAL, Ranger, and SFOD-D communities. |

It is illegal to be a mercenary at any time.
That's why there are no mercenaries anymore. |

If you are in the US military it is illegal to be a mercenary. However, I am not sure with other countries. I read a book a couple months ago about mercenaries, and it talked alot about British, French and other European soldiers becoming mercenaries in different conflicts going on today. |
