Am I right to be annoyed by this, or should I just relax?
Find answers to your legal question.

Am I right to be annoyed by this, or should I just relax?

My fiance is serving in Iraq right now, and whenever I meet someone new, and the subject happens to come up, I always get the "oh I'm sorry, that George Bush...war never should've started...warmongers..."

I consider myself an understanding person. So I know that when someone hears about the war, and they have strong political feelings, they want to express them.
But I keep hearing the same thing, often a lot more opinionated than I just described.
I really am curious why people feel the need to go on and on about politics instead of just simply saying, "oh, I'm sorry you are apart," or "tell him thanks for his service," or anything like that. It always turns into a political rant against Bush and the war. I don't want to hear about it anymore. (I think they assume I want the war ended immediately, that I want him home - which I do - but why would htey assume this, especially since military families tend - tend - to be more conservative?)
However, I want to understand why people say this. And I want to know if I am just being an old bag for getting annoyed, or if I am a little justified.
Any opinion helps! Thanks!

The sad fact is people have strong feelings about the war in Iraq.

This would bother me too. I think they might back off if you responded that you are proud of what he is doing in Iraq and you are confident that he will come home when his job is done. This way, you are letting them know their political rants are not welcome, without being rude. Good luck and tell him thanks for his service.

I wish I could give you an answer that would make you feel better about it but I can't. I run into the same thing. You just have to ignore most of it. My nephew has served 3 tours in Iraq and I never hear any cheerful words as to how he is or that he has done the right thing by serving our country. Very disheartening.

All I can say is to look forward to the time he will return and that there are people out here who understand and are grateful for his service.

Some civilians don't think we joined out of pride of country and think we just joined for benefits. As such, they assume all of us hate Bush for "sending us to our deaths for oil" or whatever story they can think of instead of allowing us to stay home with our families and do nothing. If they knew the truth and stopped feeling sorry for us for doing our jobs then they wouldn't keep blaming Bush and instead support what we do. I might miss my family when I am deployed but I go there because it is my job and I don't waste my time trying to pass blame. I can't count the amount of times some of my family members complained and how I had to nip it in the bud. I appreciate anybody who wants to thank and support the military. But at the same time I avoid the ones who want to go on about how much they hate Bush for starting the war (which he couldn't do without Congress, which they keep forgetting) because most of them don't even support the military or have the wrong idea of us altogether.

yes you have the right. But the next time someone says that to you, just follow it up with "well i just miss him" or something along those lines. get them off the subject of hating on Bush, and onto another that wont annoy you.

Maybe even give your exact opinion to them, without hating on anyone. then change the subject. be strong, and people will understand even better without hating on Bush and the war.

The war is very divisive, and people have strong opinions on it. That being said, I'm of the opinion that two things that shouldn't be discussed in casual conversation is politics and religion.

You have every right to be annoyed, and thank you for supporting you fiance.

Ann
Its one of the things people do. along with pregnancy, marriage, divorce, the president, etc. Its a way that people want you to know that they care. Along with their opinions. I am sure you have done it before, maybe about another subject. Just support what he is doing, and if you are a sarcastic person, just tell the someone have to pay the bills, no war no job. LOL sorry but it is true.

Most people don't understand what it feels like to have a loved one so far away for so long doing something dangerous. They're trying to imagine themselves in your shoes but there's no way to imagine that. My husband has been to Iraq twice and I once had someone say "Oh, I know exactly what you're going through. My husband travels a lot for business." Well, no...you don't know what it's like because people don't usually shoot at you when you fly out of town for business meetings.

By them discussing politics with you it's one way they can relate to you. I think for so much of the American public the war in Iraq has lasted much longer and turned out much differently than anyone originally expected. They assume you must be as frustrated as they are, even more so, since it's your fiance that's over there and hope to connect with you on that level.

Just know that they mean well, just like when someone says "So how are you holding up?" (when you really don't want to be asked that question either) or "I don't know how you do it! I could never be away from my loved one for a year!" or "Don't you miss him?". They truly don't understand what it's like and are trying to be supportive but not knowing how. When I don't want to hear it I just change the subject and am thankful that they care enough to try.

I guess in the end it all depends on what kind of relationship you want to maintain with these people
No, your not wrong to be a little insensed about these people being so crude. After all, most are just touting the line that CNN has been drilling into their liberal minds for over a year or so.
These little mush minds have been given everything they have based on the freedom of their country. They don't know what it would be like to be a minute man (or woman) in a militia to defend your own country in a civil war. All they know is they have no fortitude to stick it out and do what is right. The honorable people serving in our military understand what is at stake here and don't want to come back to finish the job later.
As for it being "Bush's war", its Obama's war now, and he hasn't accomplished anything either. Oh he claims that he will be bringing most troops back in 2011, but few of these idiots actualy realize it was Bush that negotiated the return of the troops by 2012. Obama's just trying to white wash the fence to take credit for the return.
Another issue is that these same intellectual midgets have never spoken to the iraqies that have been given their freedom and what life was like before under Saddam's rule.
So, in retrospect, if you actually want to keep any of these brainwashed individuals as friends, you probably should keep the converstation light, but tell them that you think they listen to too much liberal media, that we did good work in Iraq, just because they never hear about in on American TV...like the building of schools and such, perhaps mention that its Obama's war now and he hasn't changed policy much. Remind them that there are radical muslims out there (if they can remember back to 911) and taking out support for them is the only way to defeat them. That military members are putting their lives on the line to support their cushy life her in America so we aren't rocked by a bomb randomly across the nation.
If that doesn't work, well, they probably aren't worth knowing in the first place. They are too shallow to consider reality, they are too dumb to know history, they are too selfish to actually do something for their country and too lame to be respected.

you have every right to be annoyed by those ignorant "people" they have never been there and don't know anything about what we are doing over there, be thankful though that they haven't started with the "how do you know he's faithful" rhetoric yet. The reason people are like this is because there are to many ignorant Liberals in the world.
