Education, healthcare and research come to mind.
It is absolutely necessary that the US be able to defend itself. Beyond that, it is debatable.
What is not debatable is the destruction of having a society with progressively lower and lower test scores compared to the rest of the industrialized world, watching our car companies fail claiming that their health care benefits are big reasons why and watching people die of AIDS or consume oil waiting for cheaper renewable technologies to come along. |

Wow, did you know that we spend only about half as much of the GDP on the military than we did during the cold war?
And we are fighting 2 active wars now. And winning. I say that's a pretty good trick. |

Say what you want... cry all you want... when ever some one gets the crap kicked out of 'em who do they call?
America.
WWI ?
WWII ?
The very fact people can trash talk their own government reinforces the fact that they live in a great country.
Perfect country... no.
Great.. Yes.
Millitary spending... fine, whatever. My son went to school today and no missiles where flying over his 7 year old head! |

The US spends more on education than the next 20 countries combined.
The US spends more on health care, than the next 20 countries combined.
I could go on and on and keep listing things like this.
But whats the point.
We spend more on everything, than everyone else does.
Because we are the richest country on earth and have a larger population than all but two countries.
The US population is larger than every country in europe combined,
So wouldn't it make since, that we spend more than all of them combined ??? |

I don't know if we should cut down on our military spending, but I definitely think we should begin paying off our national debt. |

We have alot to defend!
We are the highest power in the world and there will always be those who want to be the "king of the hill" and try to knock us down.
If you want to go to sleep at night and not wonder where the next car bomb is going to be or drive our nations highways without worrying about IEDs, then take a serious look at our military, what they accomplish and how we ALL benefit before you criticize any more. |

Just by virtue of the fact that our global neighbors know that . . . THAT alone is a "good thing" . . . We need to spend more and even further advertise our budget . . . |

well this is one of the reasons why we are the most powerful country.the only complaint i have and areas i think we need to spend more money on is.for those who are good hard workers and have a track record to prove it,yet get in a rut where they could posibly lose their house.help those out .not give those damn bums living off the welfare system who can work, but are too lazy to. |

We spend more in total. But as a percentage of our total GNP it's only 10-15%. Russia spends 45% of its GNP. |

Without a strong military to combat the problems of the world our security would be a bigger problem then healthcare, SS, education or any other problems |

Excessive military spending has negative and positive results.
I will start my answer with the negative things about military spending of our Government. We spend billions and billions of dollars to fund the war in Iraq. For me, the government should balance itself in all aspects of governance.
President Bush wanted the Congress to pass a new fund for the war in Iraq that is worth billions of dollars but he vetoed the Child Health care bill twice. The Child Health Care bill will American children to be health insured. We can neither use those billions of dollars he says as fund for the war to combat illegal immigration and Social Security. We can also use them by strengtening our troops more here and abroad. We can also use them by passing a law that will make education low-cost for all American youth.
The positive thing about this is if we sustain our troops in Iraq, we can be sure that the world will be a safe. Al-Qaeda is a huge threat to the United States and to the world. If we withraw our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, we make the enemies more powerful and horrible. They will seize the governments of Iraq and Afghanistan to launch attacks against the United States both biologically and by nuclear means. Our troops are in Iraq and Afghanistan not only to protect the innocent Iraqi and Afghan people, not only because of our country, but also because they want to protect the world from the threat of terror that will make our world a world of chaos if these terrorists succeed. |

We come in at #28 - spending just 4.06% of our GDP protecting that GDP.
Next question :-) |

This is a very good question, one that reverbarates around the minds of most people who have common sense. The United States could effectively cure all its social problems such as; poverty, unemployment, political weakenesses (local level) and many many other areas.
The US arms market is the primary catalysts and accelerant for wars around the globe it starts wars, which causes more weapons to be produced, and it sells weapons to countries with very bad human rights records. To quote Bill Hicks:
"You know all that money we spend on the military ever year - trillions of dollars? Instead, if we use this money to feed and clothe the poor of this world, which it would do many times over, then we can explore space, inner and outer, together, as one race." |

Well if China is one of the next 14 countries, than that isn't true, because they spend close to 80 percent of what the US spends on its military.
And i like the idea about the Stargate...
and about us winning the current wars in which we are engaged i ask, what is your definition of winning? we are currently entrenched in a country who government is now broken and doesn't look like it will fix itself any time soon with the disputes between the sunnis and shiites. Sure sounds like a victory to me (hint: that was sarcasm). |

I would personally like to spend my own money, rather than have lobbyists in Washington dictate how the Congress directs my funds. |

Not only america. China, Russia, France, UK, Germany, everybody is trying to build crap to kill humans. I say they are not far off from their goal, say 20 years tops before this world gets blown up.
Humans are the stupidest animal on earth. |

Hello, How else would it be possible, if you can control the growth in population how else can you minimize it?
Send an entire army of men on a suicidal journey with the "intent" to save America and blame oil for it...
I personally think this manipulation is brilliant, but rather unfair and a little deceitful. |

More money going to healthcare, education i.e. things that actually benefit the citizens + lower taxes. What good is paying so much for a military if we can't afford to care for the veterans when they come home from war? So many vets are without proper healthcare today. Doesn't make sense to me...
The average American would need to pay about $90K to balance the budget. This is close to what a single Javelin missile costs... |

Just think of all the things America could do if they halved their defence budget.
Invest in alternate energy.
Build schools, hospitals, parks.
Help the homeless and the mentally ill.
Improve their roads, water lines, drains.
It's so much money, it's hard to fathom. |

it depends on your ideology..if you're a neocon then its good coz it means world domination and the bigger your military, the more domination!!! if you're a libertarian of a left winger, then its bad coz it steals from domestic policies like health care, education and so on,leberals want money to go to social policies...conservatives want it to go to military and security...so it depends...i think its a bad thing!!!..coz im anti-war...LIVE IN PEACE |
