Hi, I'm British and was just wondering if it was true that you can join the US military if you're not American, in the hope of getting citizenship.
Is it true that Mexicans do this? Are you ex-military do you know the answer?
Also, I know it's near impossible to get into the U.S, one of my relatives was american and was a gunsmith during the civil war, would that help me in any way?

Yes you can join the US military if you are a foreigner, but you must have a valid Alien Resident Card in order to do so. You cannot be an illegal alien.
No your ancestor does not help you in any way what so ever. |

The American army does allow legal aliens to serve. It does not make you a citizen, however. On the other hand, any American that joins a foreign army loses their American citizenship. |

4% of the US armed forces are non-citizens, but they must be legal aliens in order to join.
Serving in the military does not mean you are automatically a citizen. You have to meet the same requirements as everyone else.
of course, serving wouldn't hurt your case but it is no guarantee of anything. |

Yes and no.
A foregin national cannot enlist in the US military to gain citizenship.
To enlist, you have to be either a US citizen,
Or a Permanent Legal resident, ( green card holder )
Permanent legal residents, are legal immigrants, already on thier way to citizenship.
If they enlist, then the waiting period to become a citizen, is shortened.
For just enlisting, it is shortened from 3 years, to one year.
If they are deployed to a war zone, they can apply for citizenship immediantly.
But , NO, you could not enter the US illegally or on a tourist/student visa, and then enlist in the US Military. |

Yes there are ways around it... I was stationed with many people that were not US citizens... there are many stipulations.... I would get in contact with a US recruiter...they can answer any non-citizen questions. Having American relatives has nothing to do with it... especially if it was during the civil war....... You are wanting to join the US military or just visit the US??? |

nearest US Embassy or Consulate and they could help you on this and if you can, go to a US Military

Brits generally have no problem migrating to the US, so don't be afraid to apply. It might help speed things along if you state that you wish to join the military.
It's true that citizenship is moved along for active duty military, so if that is your goal, you are on the right track. |

The answer to the joining of the military if you are not American is fallacious as is the Mexicans joining for citizenship.
I am not ex military but my father was.
If one of your relatives was American and does that help you...the answer is no...you have to make your own case...but a lot of men are on chats to find and marry American women for the card...for citizenship... |

While at Navy bootcamp I had a guy from Kenya and a guy from Colombia in my division. However both lived in the United States they just weren't citizens. |

, i had a Korean national that the us army spent 1 year teaching English and then sent him through basic training, and i had a Friend that was a Croatian national who was in my troop, and his sister was in the army also. so there are people who are in the service but i don't know what the regs are. |

Yes going into the military does help the papers get processed a bit quicker in the same manner that marriage is quicker then having relatives that are citizens. You can also join the military if you are not a citizen. You can get a relative thats a citizen to sponsor you for residency and then citizenship but that person has to be alive lol. Your best bet is to get a good lawyer, money, and patience. |

Yes it is true but your jobs are limited to ones not requiring a security clearance. While I was an RDC a couple years back I had recruits from all over the globe, Nigeria, Phillipines, Europe, and on. |

If you go to the US embassy in your country, they should beable to steer you in the right directions.
During basic training, there were a couple south koreans and and russian(i think russian) or somewhere like that, who were in my flight. |

many folks join the U.S. Army from all over the world every year, and many chose to earn their U.S. Citizenship by serving America, although you don't have to.
I personally have known U.S. Soldiers from several countries, including Canada and Britain, Haiti, South Africa, Mexico, and Australia. |

Yes you can join the military even if you arent an american citizen. After 4 years of enlistment you are granted american citizenship though. I know this because my friends dad has been in the National Gaurd for over 20 years. |
