Anybody go through Basic Training with stretch marks?
|
Alright, I've been considering joining the Military for about a year now. I've lost about 120 pounds just so I could serve my country. But one thing started to bother me recently. I'm extremely self concious about my stretch marks (to the point of never taking my shirt off), I have them on my sides, upper arms, and the most extreme ones on my shoulders. Other then my shoulders, the rest are fairly small and faded too my skin color. I want to know from anyone out there has gone through basic and has stretchmarks , and what was your experience.
Thanks in advance. P.S. I am a MAN!

I say go.. I have been through it and I can tell you that people will be way too busy to care about your stretch marks. Heck you lost 120 lbs so that you can go.. Now lets do it.. |

Never been to basic training with them but I go to the pool and beach all the time. They're just stretch marks, I had them before I got fat and my brother who's never been fat has them too. They're cause from excessive growing not just weight gain. |

You are a friggin beacon of a man in my eyes. Loosing 120 lbs so that you can serve in the military !!!
Dude, you need to seriously just pay attention to the training in basic all the other crap will die off when they see your set in your ways. Pay no attention to the people who would criticize you for your stretch marks. They will never know what kind of fight it was for you. Its just simply awesome to hear that someone out there has the motivation to do this for my country!!!!!!!!
Thank you |

basic is so fast, no one will even notice, not to mention, lots of people have them at the end, cause they lose a lot of weight! |

Dawg, you are GOOD TO GO!!!
Don't worry, about the marks. It's boot camp, not fashion camp. Your bros there are going to love your commitment and motivation to being the best that you can be, so you'll be able to wear those marks with pride. Just show them some pics of what you looked like before if you want instant respect.
BTW, there will be a few overweighters there getting off the bus with you ... in the USMC, when I went to boot, the heavies went into the PCP (Physical Conditioning Platoon) aka "pork chop platoon" if they couldn’t keep up physically with a regular platoon. PCPers wore red markings on their grey sweatshirts used for physical training (i.e., exercising). When a PCPer cycled back into regular rotation (we were always reminded of who they were because they still wore the red-marked sweats since there was no point buying new ones), and graduated boot camp, they were looked upon very highly because of their commitment.
The hardest part about boot will be the mental games. The DIs will do their job to humiliate you and break you down to your core then build you up from there. So, it's just easier to go with the flow instead of fighting it. In the process you'll build strong bonds with the rest of the recruits and be a better person.
Much harder will be getting out of the service and keeping that weight off. (I myself could stand to lose about 40 lbs after sitting on my a55 in the office all these years afterwards.)
Best of luck, stay behind cover, keep safe, and thanks for serving! |

First off congratulations on your weight los, that is amazing.
Im in the same boat as you i have like 20 more kilos to lose by June so i can enlist.
But dont let strech marks bother you, if they sk just tell em. I say it shows real commintment as you mde the effort and put in the hard work.
I am aware that certain countires ask that you weight like 3 to 6 months before enlisting after losing weight, so they can know your not gonna put it on again.
Or go get a tan, they usually fade mate. |

I say join and don't worry about the stretch marks...if you've lost that much weight to join, you owe it to yourself to finish what you started! Plus, the only time you'd have your shirt off is getting in and out of the shower...and unless you have some fruit-cake in your flight who can't keep his eyes off you...you've got nothing to worry about.
Look at your stretch marks as a reminder of what you've already accomplished and what more you can achieve when you put your mind to it! Your half way there, don't give up because of something so insignificant!
Good Luck!!! |

Hey man, I HAVE THEM!!! I went through basic a year or so ago and I had them. They are terrible on my back and everyone always asks what they are. Doesn't bother me at all and no one ever said a word to me about them in basic training. You are too busy to have to worry about why the guy next to you has some stretch marks. You don't give a crap about that stuff anymore man. |

I was fat my whole life and then when I turned 22 I decided to do something about it and got into great shape, now at 26 I am one of the fittest people that I know and I wear my stretch marks like a badge of honour, in my opinion they show not only me but the rest of the world what I have acheived.
I was never physically gifted and everyone from my family is obese. I broke this mould and am now able to run marathons, do gymnastics and am a decent Martial Artist too... I would never be embarrassed by my stretch marks and neither should you, they show that you worked hard to get where you are now and probably harder than most of the people you'll go to basic with did, you will be more prepared than them because you've already been putting in hard yards.
Just go for it my friend and congratualtions and good luck :-) |

Yes you should go. You can also look into some cream (has coco-butter in it) that is commonly used for pregnant women who have gotten stretch marks. I'm certainly not comparing a MAN to a pregnant woman but you just rub this stuff on and it should fade the stretch marks. LOL hope this helps. |

Well to be honest with you. You have hygiene formations every night. Where you stand in a formation in your squad bay and three by three you go up to the drill instructors and turn very slowly so that they can inspect you to see if you have any infections or something crazy going on. It's not to look at you, but you do a lot of crazy stuff in boot camp so they have to inspect you because most recruits are afraid to say anything. They may make fun of you and I hate to say that, but they used to make fun of a lot of people. But, that's the military. But they mostly make fun of you if your fat. That's bad, but you know what you came into the military and you are saying that you are going to be fit that's why their standards. I was in the marine corps and they have the hardest standards, but it always keeps you in check. I never minded. Just keep in mind yeah you may get made fun of but they will make fun of you for something I promise. I had to wear those stupid glasses cause you can't wear contacts in bootcamp so I got called four eyes all the time. You get over it pretty fast. If they pick on then they normally like you. So think of it that way. |

Dude, if you lost enough weight to have stretch marks, then that's something to be proud of. And Basic will be hard regardless. If you have the commitment to yourself and your goals that you had to lose that weight, you'll have no problem. |

You know a lot of guys get stretch marks because of weight lifting too. Who cares what other people are thinking. You should be proud of your accomplishment:) |
