We are currently stationed at Fort Stewart. 2nd time here. It is an okay place. They are constantly deploying. In fact almost all of post was gone in the year 2007 and most of 2008. And more still in the works. Depending on what brigade your hubby or you will be going to will depend on weather or not you deploy and where to. They haven't really put out info yet on who is going.
They are currently building new things here. They are adding another CDC, a new Teen Center, a new Shoppette with Car Wash, a new Middle School (they have 3 elementary schools on base already), they are in the process of trying to get a 5th Bridage here but plans for that have been put on hold. Hinesville, the town outside, loves the military. They have a few things to do off post in Hinesville. Housing is okay, they do have tons of new housing on Stewart and are in the process of building new ones. Hinesville has lots of housing for rent or buy. They have a Super Walmart, no Mall however, and tons of little shopping centers.
Hunter is alot smaller than Stewart but they also have tons of new housing and new buildings going up. You get a higher BAH for living in Savannah (Hunter) than at Stewart.
Savannah is right outside of Hunter and there is alot to do there. Savannah has 2 malls, many, many shopping centers, a few movie theathers and what else you might find in a major city. They also have a very historic Downtown and Savannah is suppose to be the most haunted city in the USA. They have fireworks on the first Friday of every month down at the Riverwalk. If you have any daughters, Savannah is the birthplace to the founder of girl scouts.
Beaches are about an hour away, Tybee Beach, Jeckel Island. Florida is about an 1 1/2 hours away, Jacksonville and Jacksonville has a really nice zoo that I am sure your little ones would love. DisneyWorld is about 5-6 hours away. And Tampa is about 30 minutes to an hour more than that. Atlanta is about 5-6 hours from Stewart and there is lots to do there. Stewart has a full size hospital on base. They have 2 pools, and 3 water spray parks. Tons of playgrounds and parks.
Again, they deploy alot. I believe Stewart is ahead right now, I believe, in number of deployments to Iraq as a complete Division.
Do you have kids. School ends here the last day in May so you will be getting here just as summer starts. If you would like to email me for extra info, do so. I will try and help you out.
Are you both military?
EDIT: just to let you know that if his orders say Hunter, that is still not a gaarantee that you will be assigned Hunter. You will come to the replacement at Stewart first and if a unit or brigade on Stewart needs him more than Hunter, you will be assigned to Stewart instead of Hunter. Have seen this happen to many soldiers especially with what is going on at Stewart right now, they are trying to fill slots up in certain units. |

I didn't care for Hunter at all. It is very small. I didn't care for the weather and all the damn insects.
Tybee beach is nearby but during the summer it can be packed. There are 2 malls on the same road. The main drag is Abercormie or something like that.
You aren't that far from FL though.

Hunter is a great post. Rather small. Has a nice golf course on it. It's located at a really nice part of the town that is accessable to about everything in Savannah. I think you will enjoy it. |
