There's a very real chance I could be going there with my soon to be husband. Didn't really plan on Maryland, but thats the military for you, right? I just need any details anyone can give...on base living? etc? Jobs? I know it's right outside of Washington and where it's locality is, but lost on anything else. Thanks!

It's been a number of years since I was stationed in the Greater D.C. area. It's expensive, I do remember that much. You can't swing a dead cat over your head without hitting an officer either.
Below are some sites that might help. The first two are Military One Source.com and Military Homefront, State of Maryland. The others are military spouse type sites where you can get info from spouses in that area.

Jobs shouldn't be to hard to find. Andrews AFB is right of the Washington beltway, so you can get about anywhere pretty quick when its not rush hour. The closest area of DC is also the worst area for crime and drugs (Southeast). Once you get past that area on you way into DC, you should be okay. If you plane to live off base, its better to live east or south of the base for the better areas if you stay close. Virginia is only 15 minutes away. Washington Post and the Washington Times are the 2 main papers. If you don't have a car, the Washington metro has plenty of buses and trains. Baltimore and Annapolis are close by, so you will have plenty of places for day trips. Andrews is also where Air Force One is based, they have a great commissary and medical facility. I linked Prince Georges county which has some good services and welcome to Maryland. Also the beach (Ocean City) is only several hours away. |

Andrews AFB isn't in the worst part, but it certainly isn't in the best part of Maryland (still better than Baltimore, however). Let me explain better; it is in Prince George's County. PG county is a county which serves solely as a suburb of DC, and is known for its terrible public schools and "bias" police force. It is so bad that Bowie, MD wants to be annexed by Anne Arundel County. But, not to far away is Montgomery County (holla!) and Charles County on opposite ends of PG, which are very nice. If you decide to live in Charles County, many people I know have AF neighbors who make the 20 minute commute.
* I am not in the military, but if I threw a rock with enough effort, I could graze the Andrews AFB water tower (the big ugly one, you guys know the one I am taking about). |
