If you join as a 68W, do yourself a favor and don't go around calling yourself a "combat medic". Yes, you'll hear the phrase "combat medic" a lot in AIT but, once you get to a regular unit you'll wind up offending a lot of medics who have actually earned the right to be called "Combat Medics". Being a 68W makes you a Healthcare Specialist or a Medic, you generally can't consider yourself a combat medic until you've actually been deployed and have had to do your job under the extreme conditions that can occur on deployments.

I'm not in any way trying to "knock" any medics that haven't been deployed, just trying to point out the difference that most medics make between the two titles.

This is exactly the way my wife(68WM6) explained it to me and also what I've seen first hand.

A 68W is a combat medic. What you're talking about is what unit you will be assigned to. If it's a combat unit you'll go to combat, if it's hospital you'll essentially be a nurse. You can put in a list of preferences, but the army will assign you where they need you. If you are male you have a decent chance of getting the unit you want though, females are still not allowed to be assigned to combat units, so the they tend pile up in the non-combat units, opening up room for you.
