Are Marines really the first ones in?

My unit stepped across the border of Afghanistan on October 13th 2001 and we ran into a white dude hanging with a bunch of sheep herders. There was this little satellite dish behind his mud hut and he knew our Platoon Commander by name. The LT didn't even know who this guy was, but "Frank" sure knew him. It was kinda surreal.

Yes and No. It really depends on the mission and who's available. But yes they tend to go in first but as you mentioned they arent the only ones to go in first. Rangers are a very mission specific fighting force. Like I said, it all depends on the mission.

Not always but in the past, it has been a frequent situation with the Marine Corps.

It depends on the need. Sometimes no one goes in except Air Force... sometimes only the Marines go in and so forth. It really depends on the situation, timeliness, and availability. For Kosovo as an example... a squad of Marines went in the Hot Spots of the country, collecting pictures and intelligence. At a few points they were in contact with allies in country that passed along inside information. On top of this, there were half a dozen contacts with the enemy, causing injuries and death. The Marines were there over 3 weeks before the remaining portion of their platoon was called in. Once the remaining platoon arrived, they began to setup a base station. After 2 more weeks of setting up base, the Army came in. But, on the other hand, after another week after the Army came, a Navy Seals Team showed up and we found out that they were on the other side of the country working inland towards us. We were sort of working in harmony with each other without knowing that both of our teams were put in "first."

Yes and no.

Marines are designed to, and typically have been the first large-scale force to offensivley enter a country, but the very first would be Air Force and Navy planes, birds, and UAVs which establish air dominance, followed by and in conjunction with Special Forces, followed by the Marines.

Depends on the operation, but typically no. There are a whole slew of floks that go in and prep the battlefield first.

Like others said, depends on Mission. Marines are controlled by the President not Congress so they "go to war" quicker. Marines are a small branch and don't have the fire power and cannot sustain themselves like the Army so again it depends on the situation. As far as Spec Ops going in, ???????????????.

UDT used to do it, until merged with the SEALs.
