Are land navigation and hand to hand combat lost "arts" in the U.S. military?

As far as hand-to-hand training/Army Combatives, I've been trained 4 times now in the 40hr block of instruction of Combatives 1. :-/

Land Nav is still taught in Basic and every few months we do classes on it as well as the GPS Plugr.

No this is our number one training course in the U.S. military, in the Marine Corps we train martial arts, and in Combat Training we do landnav. This is still used today and will be always needed, even with todays technology we must not rely on it, sometimes this systems fail and if we do not train without the use of this technology we would be left in the dark and that's not a good thing.

in the Marine Corps i know its not. Plus the Marines use the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program that u have to attain belts for promotion so they are learning and have used hand to hand combat recent. There are quite a few Marines that also have been featured by the UFC.

No every NCO in the Army has to pass Land Navigation in Warrior Leader's Course (When I went through it was Primary Leadership Development Course) All Combat Arms Soldiers in the Army have to go through and pass at least Level One Combatant Course, which teaches them advanced Hand to Hand...

Absolutely not. We had to tons of land nav with only map and compass. I still use it all the time in adventure racing.

Hand to hand...When I was just a young boot, all we did were these robotic movement to each other over and over. It didn't simulate a real fight. The the Marine Corps switched to Marine Corps Martial Arts. You actually had to get on the ground and basically grapple each other to submission. One devil dog choked our CO unconcious.

I would have to say however, that maintenance is not as well practiced. Once you have your belt, you only practice it sporadically which I think is a waste. It should be done a lot more, insteaed of cleaning rifles that are already clean, PM'ing vehicles that haven't been driven since last time you PM'd, inventorying gear at supply...

i can't speak for the other services, but at least for the 10% of the army (combat arms) that fight the war, I think we are doing just fine.

we just brought on line MMA to the line up for basic trainees, and have certified MMA (civilian contractors - BJJ) who teach up to level 4.

I think we are doing okay - as long as we stick to the basics and no rely upon electronics that murphy's law works against )(pluggers).

Land nav was one of my husband's best scores at the basic school (USMC officer) and as others have said, MCMAP.

No, land nav is still important, even in the days of GPS. Ever heard of EMP (Electra-magnetic-pulse) ? It is a "side effect " of a nuclear blast that disables electronics. So being able to find your location on a map still is as important as ever.

Hand to hand will never die. Remember the "spirit of the bayonet!"

Land Navigation mostly, they do know how to use compasses. AS for hand-to-hand, the level of training you get in that art depends on the branch you are in, or if you are special forces or not.

NO way...Still necesary but really few real "Rambos" can do fine.
In Colombia at the jungle to combat AUC (autodefensas unidas de Colombia) or drugs "Paramilitares" slaves...Would be necesary, but it is true, not a lot can do because the crimes and abuses unfortunatelly keep on.
How many real elite warriors with the best resources would need a good comand in chief to seek and destroy them all?
I think there is nobody right here right now, but in case...for sure Land N. and hand to hand combat will not be Lost arts...
But seriously...I am agree, Today almost You can say it is a lost art for the old real good warriors who served their countries honestly, most of them RIP.
