A manager at my job was talking to me today about the military and he said that only people who served in the military and went to war are veterans. Any body who has not been to war is not a veteran. My mother served in the military, but it was during a peace time. I was always under the impression that she is a veteran, although not a veteran of war. My manager is 75 years old and is dead-set in his thinking. Am I mistaken or is he? I got pretty offended when he said this because I'm very proud of my mother, but I bit my tongue because I didn't want to start an argument and I also wanted to be sure.

Don't argue with the ol codger. You are correct, a vet doesn't need to go to war to be called a vet.

Yes, anyone who served in the military for a certain amount of time regardless of combat experience...

Yes , they are veterans in every sense of the word. Not sure about now but you used to have to serve 180 days or more to receive VA benefits other than for service connected injuries. |

Yes the literal definition in regards to military is: "A person who has served in the armed force." Your manager seems to be talking out of his butt to be honest. there is a "war vet" and a regular "vet." |
