Are soldiers really heroes?
Find answers to your legal question.

Are soldiers really heroes?

The way I look at it they are paid and that voids my definition of a hero.
What are your opinions?

My wife calls me hero, I could care less what anyone else calls me.

I believe that soldiers are heroes. The only reason they get paid is to support their families. And besides, the don't get paid THAT much anyways, so it's wonderful of them to serve our country in a way that keeps us free. They could have a much easier job that has much less of a risk and pays a lot more, but no; they choose to support and serve our country as the heroes they truly are.

It depends on the soldier.

There are "heroes" in every profession, even yours.

tigersmt334
Well, they don't know you and they fight for you even if they get paid, remember money doesn't equal the cost of life. It's just Nice to have money to, you know, EAT and you know, WEAR CLOTHES, and you know maybe HAVE A HOUSE FOR WHICH TO SUPPORT YOUR FAMILY, ya know? Ya know? Just sayin' that'd be nice, wouldn't it?

I was a soldier in Viet Nam 1966-7. I was paid $273 a month to be shot at. Were low pay the measure of being a hero, I would have qualified. I was no hero. I killed plenty in Nam, but still no hero. Course all that was 42 years ago. Looks like the victors write the history. North Viet Nam ended up winning their independence from foreign domination. But while there every soldier is defending the Constitution and all it stands for. They fight and risk their lives in your place. And for that they are heroes. Whether or not a war is right, soldiers do as directed and again, they are heroes for that. And the ones currently fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan stand as the greatest of heroes. May they all be coming home soon, safely and as victorious marching units.

They might get paid. But I dout they do it for the money. They do it to protect our country, They risk their lives for our country not for the pay(that isn't very much anyway). Soldiers are heroes plain and simple!!

yes they are...are you out there risking your life for peanuts...

Yes if soldiers didn't fight WW2 would of been a lot different. I would say the soldiers fighting in the war on terror are also. Regardless of what you believe about the wars we are in now they are still fighting for you. Anyone that is willing to put there life at risk for there country is a patriot and a hero, as long as they do it right (not torture people etc). Its odd only a radical left wing liberal (not you moderates) would call them murders etc.

I think they are. Soldiers, especially enlisted, don't make a lot of money at all. My Dad/husband/brother etc. all served, and they didn't do it for the money.

Scrappy52
Yes they are, they volunteered to go into the danger zone, to fight for rights and freedoms that you take for granted. You should be thanking them,

I think most of them are paid or not, but just like dirty cops I think some are not great people.

Katie_lynn08
YES....they are hero's...They need money to! they cant be fighting for us for free...some of themhave familys to! How can you ask that?

Heck yes they are heros! Anyone who does a job that puts their life in danger for the sake of saving other's is a hero in my book. Not only do they put themselves in danger but they are away from their families for years at a time. That's not something the average joe can do.

Yggdrasil
Are YOU a hero? Doubtful. Put your A-S-S in the grass for a bit, then get back with me.

many rise above and beyond. it's not the pay that makes someone a hero, it's the integrity, honor and self sacrifice. fire men get paid and they are considered heros as well. pay attention to detail. The airline pilots that crashed the flight in PA killing everyone on board to save more lives were heros, as were all of the members of the flight, they almost unanimously agreed to take the flight down than to let it hit something huge killing mass ppl,. I will assume u don't have the qualities of a hero, so you will never be one.

yes i think so because they are there to serve and protect our country. if they werent out there fighting for us and trying to keep us safe, who would? nobody?...our country would be in much more danger without them. i think its right that they get paid because a lot of them are over there getting hurt. i mean, look at all the ones that have even died. there are men and women over there that are getting hurt and arent able to get a job back over here because of that. many of them are put out of work after coming back from serving our country.

cbrownie
Yes. Their sacrifices ensure you keep your right to be an ungrateful know it all. There's more to being a soldier than the measly pay. Don't mistake them with mercenaries, they aren't rich and they don't do it for themselves. They do it because they love their country, despite morons like you living in it.

Dmoney S
yes and no. it depends on how you wanna look at it. as u said they are getting paid and that does kinda void it out. but if you look at it this way those people are going out on the battlefield risking their lives. its not like they were forced to be soldiers they are doing it because they love their country. is that not what a hero is someone who selflessly goes out and risks something great without being forced to do it. getting paid is just a sort of thank you if you wanna think of it that way.

im not patriotic or anything but that's just my opinion.

I am a Soldier.

Am I a hero?

I doubt it. Google PFC Ross McGinnis -- he was a hero.

I'd like to think that I would have the courage to act as he did, but I cannot say that I would without being there and doing that. No one can.

Let me explain something to you: I make 1949$ base pay, as a SPC with three years at my job, per month. I make an additional 800$ a month for housing, 279$ for food, and 600$ to offset the cost of the euro rate (I am stationed in Europe) = 3628$.

I support two children, and because I had no choice but to move off-post, I paid over 1200$ in rent last month --- and it will probably be more next month. Over 100$ a month for electric, and about 70$ just for house phone and internet. 650$ a month in childcare, and about 400$ a month in groceries. About 250$ in gas, because I live 30 minutes away, and then of course, my children need to be clothed, as do I, and trust me, the ACU DOES NOT last six months (though my old BDU's are still holding up), and the boots are for crap. What are expenses? Healthcare (it isn't ACTUALLY FREE people), life insurance, that, with my job, I can't afford not to have; plus socking away for two college educations and a retirement.

(MOST OF THE ABOVE WERE BASED ON THE EXCHANGE RATE --- HENCE THE HIGH COST)

I could make three times as much doing this as a contractor -- and I would only work eight hour days. ****, contract to go downrange with KBR? I'd be banking.

So while I'm no hero --- I am NOT in this for the money.

Soon, I will deploy, and I will not see me children for fifteen months. See, we had orders BEFORE the law changed.

So my kids are certainly heroes --- at least to me.

My Soldiers who show up and spend all day, that's right, from 0600 to 1700, in garrison, five days a week, sometimes six or seven, working their asses off, yup, they are heroes to me.

Divide all of my pay and allowances --- I make 11$ an hour. No, this isn't about money.

This is about a contract that I signed, and that I am more than happy to fulfill. This is about doing what's right, and showing some integrity. It's about serving this country because I WANT to, not because I have to. It's my way of giving back.

So while it isn't necessarily heroic, at least not to me, it sure beats trolling Yahoo! Answers to feel like an Internet badass.

Jim C
Not all soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marine are heros. Only the ones that do heroic deeds like jump on a grenade to save others without thinking of themselves first, or something equivilant to that.

A hero to you may not be a hero to me. It's all in what their actions mean to other people, but paid or not paid, they're more heoric than you, you little twirp because they voulnteered to put their life on the line for your sorry ***$ because you don't have the balls to do it yourself. That's MY definition of a hero.

That's just my opinion.
