Are the american troops winning or losing the war in iraq?

No. American politicians are losing that fight. The demands for public timetables, the threats to cut funding, and the total disregard for what the military HAS accomplished over there are undermining the efforts of the soldiers. That place WILL fall apart when we pull out because the troops have not been given CLOSE to enough time to accomplish their primary mission: prepare Iraqi security forces to provide security for the population. That effort only began in earnest a couple of years ago. Only a fool thinks that it can be accomplished in that short time. It takes us 2-4 years to turn American men and women into professional officers, and then they need two to four years of real experience to become truely competant. The same story goes for sergeants. How in the world does anyone think we can do it in Iraq in less time with terrorists constantly thratening the families of those who stand up to fight them? Those who demand the pull-out are losing this thing, and they are responsible for the terrible problems we will have with foreign policy as a result. Clinton abandoned the Kurds when he pushed them to rebel against Hussein, and now the democrats are going to abandon the Iraqis yet again. The loss of trust will be devastating and will do more to bring more terrorist attacks against the US than anything that bumbler Clinton even managed to do. |

The American troops are completely capable of winning the war in iraq...our politicians are making us lose. |

I think SouthernG is right. It doesn't appear that we are trying to win anything over there but are very capable of it. |

There can be no winning or losing the Iraq situation. It is a totally simplistic and absurd thought that there can be a military solution.
And the "war on terrorism" cannot be "won" militarily. The roots of the reasons for the very existence of terrorists have to be addressed and force naturally elicits forceful reactions. Not until the causes are understood and confronted rationally can there be any optimism for resolution. Not much hope for that as the powers to be benefit from such conflicts as Iraq's. |

First and formost one has to remember our troops did not have an army to fight when they invaded Iraq. Other than a few pockets of mostly patriotic iraquis and some religous nuts they had noone to realy blow up or so they shot up everything on way to baghdad target practicing in case they did.The Iraqui army had given up, the Shia leader Sistani had told his peole not to fight and all that resisted were a few Sadam loyalist and mostly they tried to go hide is all. We had bribed the Iraqui generals and policos and the majority of popualtion were waiting for some relife of our imposed poverty of twelve years of sanctions and the Kurds who had already been free for 6 years with our coverts help before we invaded went about shooting sunnis and arabs with a vengence.
Yes our troops are winning. they have killed
around 237 mostly civilians since we invaded for every dead US troop.
We have complelty destroyed the infrastrucrture and almost every house within 5 mi radius of anyone who dared shoot at us and some whole city blocks flattened and people living hand to mouth.
We have broken country into thirds, physicaly and emotionaly emascualted every Iraqui male who does not do as we say ,so yes we are winning.
If ony the politicos would let the military win this war. the military could win it in one week easily. We may kill everyone or damn near all, but then it would be peacefull.
Stop your bleating you sound just like your bosses whenever they fail or want more and more to win the next battle.
NEVER IN THE HISTORY OF US HAS THE AREAS COMMANDERS HAD MORE FREEDOM TO CONDUCT OPERATIONS THAN WHAT BUSH HAS GIVEN THOSE LEADERS IN IRAQ.
NEVER!
Not even in Viet Nam was the amount of incidental killing of civilains this high and deliberate targeting of civilians as high either, a sniper shoots and old man knowing full well someone ,t he next target will come and try to rescue. Sniping at ambulances trying to reach wounded women and children, shooting of wounded enemy, but what the hell your buddies while not having to sweat as much are enjoying game time with naked Iraquis so shooting a few may be better than sending them to prison. |

We're losing. Everyday, we're losing. Contrary to what the mainstream media wants you to believe. We are losing this war and we'll continue to lose until diplomatic talks begin. |

They are winning. The Iraqi police and military should be able to take care of themselves in June according to the president of Iraq. The violence has dropped 70% from last year and the death rate in Iraq is half that of Germany and less than France's and even the U.S.'s. |

It's not the troops who are winning or losing the war; the troops only carry out the orders given to them by their commanders, who issue those orders to achieve an objective which is ultimately set by our own government.
Your question should be, "Is the American government winning or losing the war?"
Our troops are doing everything they can to win the war, but just like in Viet Nam they're the unwilling pawns in a totally inept game being played in Iraq. As I see it, we have two major roadblocks to achieving our goal of a democratic government in Iraq, those being:
1) Our own government is too busy tearing itself apart in its efforts to posturize for the upcoming elections. Our newly-elected Demoncratic congress (and no, I didn't mis-spell anything) has done more to encourage our enemies and increase their will to fight than anything else. They've sent a clear message to our enemies that our government is weak, resolve on the part of our government is failing, and now is the time to strike. And unfortunately, the ones who will bear the impact of the blow will NOT be our wonderful Demoncratic congressional leaders, but our men and women in uniform who are actually in the war zone.
2) The Iraqi government is sitting on its hands doing literally nothing to assist us in establishing the democratic government. They have dragged their feet at every turn, expecting the US to do all of the dirty work for them. In the mean time, our enemies are using this time to reorganize and regroup, planning and staging more new attacks against our troops and innocent women and children. I hate to say this, but as a veteran of the first Gulf War, this type of response is typical of the Middle Eastern people. The Saudis did the exact same thing in 1991, sitting back expecting us to do all the work for them, but when it came time to take the credit, they were jumping up and down to do it. It's no different in Iraq - once again, the Middle Eastern people are waiting for us to do the work for them. Get the Iraqi government off its collective butt and you'll see some progress.
In the mean time, our troops have done so much for the country that you'll never hear about on FOX news or CNN. They've given medical aid to the civilian population, established and reopened schools, and have played a pivotal role in the resurgence of a "normal" life for the Iraqi people, a life that they have not known since Hussein came to power.
But like I said, you won't see this on CNN. |

Leaders of countries are the only ones that can win wars! I have served my country and let me tell you service men and women can only win battles. We always lost in every war ever fought. |

America is spending around $8.5 billion in the war every month. Hundreds of soldiers have died. Thousands of civilians have been killed. Still there is no sight of real IRAQ democracy in sight. The people there are suffering worse than they were under a cruel dictator. Women's rights, education - everything has been lost in Iraq. There is fear of a civil war, with bombs exploding every single day.
So who's winning the war? |

MenifeeManiac

The war was won in 2002, when the statue of Sadam Hussein was toppled, and Sadam was captured.
However, the ensuing occupation really s*cks! |

They are not winning in any aspects.
They are keep on loosing the war.
Every day.
More and more dead bodies of U.S soldiers are being brought.
Most of the Muslim nations are considering U.S as their enemy.
Absolutely no good things happening with the war. |
