Upon enlisting you have very little choice in where you will be sent. You'll go where you are needed the most. |

You will get to write down on the "Dream Sheet" (I call it, Keep On Dreaming Sheet) while in boot or Technical School. You may or may not get what you want.
Ex. (for the Navy) If you are from Virginia and choose Norfolk, Little Creek, or Oceana, you have a higher chance of getting it. But if you picked Hawaii or San Diego, then you will have a lower chance of getting it.
For deployment (if you are in a unit that has many detachments withing the unit like Seal, EOD, HSL etc... ) For the most parts, you are sent to wherever they need you to fill the slot. However, there is this little thing called "Office Politic." Get on well with the Operational Officer and you may be able to persuade him to put you in the detachment that is going to more desirable places than the others (but most places aren't all that desirable). |

You get to put a "Dream Sheet" together of places that you would like to be stationed, but the majority of the time it's just that, a dream. It is possible though to pick.
For example, I was in the Navy and went to the AE tech school. At the end of the 6 month course I was top of my class and was allowed to talk with the detailer on the phone and select where I wanted to be assigned, which included not just location but also the type of aircraft to work on.
Having said that, it's not too common for something like that to happen.

My son is in the Air Force and he was assigned of where to go. As to where he was to be stationed, he was given three choices. Still, he didn't get any of those choices but somewhere kind of close to his first choice. I am in Texas and he, his wife and my one year old grandson are in Arkansas. Still too far for me, but it could have been the other side of the world! |
