First, thank you very much for your interest in serving your new country. You have a skill that is very valuable, and I appreciate that you are considering the Army.

You should look into the Middle Eastern Translator/Interpreter program (MOS 09L). You can do this job with your Green Card.
You cannot become a Cryptologic Linguist (MOS 35P / 35W) with your green card.

Just go to an Army Recruiting station and tell them you want to be an "Oh-nine-lima." They will take it from there.

Here is the Army website about the program.

If your recruiter seems to have trouble working with you, or figuring out the 09L program, feel free to email me.

Note to Miss Kitty Cat:
In the military, someone who deals with languages is called a linguist. I realize that this is different from the civilian world. That is why the poster asked his question in the military section - so he could get answers from people with knowledge of the military.

Check out the Army's (Active, Guard and Reserve) 09L (zero-nine-lima) program; tailor made for folks such as yourself.

A linguist has to be able to get a security clearance. That could be very difficult for you to do especially since you are NOT a citizen.

Go to a local recruiter. They will be more then happy to get you started. If you decide to join, may I suggest looking such info on your own next time? Not being rude, but the military rough on people who do not.

=^_^=
I'm not 100% sure you can since you are not a citizen. I think US citizenship would be your first step. Also, you'd probably be a translator, not a linguist. You'd need formal training in linguistics to be a linguist. Knowing a lot of languages doesn't make you a linguist, and being a linguist doesn't mean you know a lot of languages.

Hi
Am deeply interested to join the USA army as a linguist (Translator & Interpreter) , but I need to know the time of contracting period. Am so interested to serve in Iraq because I served with CPA & MNF-I for more than one year, I like also to deployed in the middle east also if possible. Am here now in USA, am studying Ms in Administration, I will apply for the green card after two months.
