I'm going to say mid to late '70s.
I wasn't around then watching T.V., so here's how I came to this conclusion:
1. I know the Navy used/were going to use the Village People song for a recruitment commercial.
2. When the Vietnam War was going on, people were drafted. So who cared about commercials to recruit when you could just send someone a draft letter.
3. On the same note, with the war over and the disestablishment of the draft, they probably turned to T.V. to get their recruit numbers up. |

U.S. military advertising dates back to the beginning of our country. As soon as there were commercials, there were military commercials. This was around the year 1931. They mostly stayed on subject, pitching service as patriotism, up through the end of WWII. Since then, they have strayed further and further from relevance in messaging until today when they have NASCAR teams, video games, rodeo cowboys, flashy hummers blasting rap music and even profiles on websites like MySpace and Facebook. The more unpopular the war, the more misleading the messaging. |
