is it probable, if we are in a war, that i will have to use a gun?
how about hand to hand combat? defense etc skills?

No and you won't be used for any of that stuff unless there is no one else. You will just have to worry about your dentistry |

Yes you will learn all of that in basic training. Once youre out in the field, its doubtful that you will need to use those skills. |

I was medical core in the Army and was in the 21st CSH in Mosul when we invaded (again) in 2003. All of the officers had weapons, and they had all gone thru training, but only about 10% of them even knew how to clean their weapon, let alone actually hit anything with it. I never knew an officer who had to pull their weapon from the holster during the invasion or fire a round. That's what us peon enlisted-types were for.
If you are in the Army, you will be more forward than if you are Air Force, generally speaking. But trust me, you would still be a LONG way from the bullets. There are so few dentists in the military at all (it takes too long and is too expensive to train them as compared to infantry or artillery officers) that they can't afford to throw you into a frontline unit, if that is what you are worried about.
Would you be trained in hand to hand? Yeah. Would you ever have the need to use it after you get your commission? Not bloody likely. |

you will have to learn to use and qualify with firearms during basic. |

You'll learn it, but doubtful that you'd ever use it. Dentistry is a highly trained skill. They're not going to stick you in a combat zone. More than likely, you'll be stateside on a military base.
The Navy has an excellent dentistry program. |

a Dr. i.e. dentist is a Officer, or a tect, is a inlisted man or woman. all get trainning but don't fight unless overrun if in the field. Army is field work USMC is harder work but good too, and the Navy is at sea and shore, and the Air Force, doesn't see a lot of action as a rule. |

Yes and No.
You will probably have to shoot one for training since you will be an officer, which allows you to carry a side arm if you so choose. On the other hand, the medical corp has its own commissioning program which is different then OCS. Having not gone through this I could not give you a for sure answer, but just by judging that you are in the Army and an Officer, you probably will have to be proficient. |

These are questions you need to ask before you commit to joining the military. |

Who needs guns, when you're a dentist? You are already the most fear-inducing person on the planet. Just wave your syringes around and you'll have them running.
Maybe not. I guess they might not, probably won't be, people who have been to a dentist before. Better learn to shoot. |

First and foremost you will be a soldier first. So during basic and other trainings you will be taught on how to handle, assemble and use a gun. You will also be taught hand to hand combat and other defense skills.
Now that being said, you MOS will determine where you will be stationed at and if deployed where you will end up. Like some people said, you most likely will not be put on the front line, you will probably be in the rear somewhere.
So in the case that there is ever an attack on your base, you will know how to protect yourself and not have to worry about someone trying to protect you and him. Someone will have your back but at the same time they can feel confident that you know your soldiering skills, like how to use a gun, and will have their back also.
good luck |

Medical pers are non-combatants (re: Geneva Convention). You will be trained to handle a personal weapon (sometimes a rifle, in other militaries just a pistol) for protection of your person and your patients. The Geneva Convention articles specify how a medical person would be treated if captured, etc. Unfortunately, not all state and non-state actors acknowledge the Geneva Convention, so it is best to be VERY familiar with your weapon. If you can operate a periostial elevator, you can strip, clean and fire a modern weapon. As a member of an army field hospital, you would be slightly more likely to be put into a dangerous situation than at an airstrip or at sea (Kabul vs UAE vs Gulf, for example). |

It would be better for you to learn the basics in case you do end up in a hostile event, but like Chaplains, your contacted for your services, given an officer rank and placed where you will do the most good. Generally, it will be a MASH or hospital unit. You will not nee to go thru Basic training if you already have your certiication for dentistry. |
