As military personnel are you for or against torture?

First off water boarding isn't torture. You are held down and water is poured on your face.

b: the infliction of intense pain (as from burning, crushing, or wounding) to punish, coerce, or afford sadistic pleasure.

Sodomy with hot metal, cutting off some dudes balls just for the hell of it. That's torture. The stuff that was done to Terrorists is about the same as what you'd go through in boot camp. Sleep deprivation, stress positions, etc.

We need stronger tactics than bad cop good cop. People that work in Human Intel gathering need limits, that's what separates us from monsters, but they can't be constantly looking over their shoulder. Their job is national security, let them protect it.

Studies have shown that torture does not get any useful confessions or intelligence since the physical and mental pain causes the individual to say anything to stop the pain. Though it may not be suitable for collecting information, it may still be effective as a deterant for terrorism. They use similar tactics (ie public execution of military personnel on the web, hanging the bodies on a bridge, etc.) to strike fear into the hearts of the people. Our society speaks of the "Geneva Convention" but needs to understand that everybody does not follow it. I personally believe that human rights for terrorists should be violated to save human lives. Not everyone will agree to this but it's a necessary evil.

Its a very effective way of extracting intelligence from your enemy.
Waterboarding gets results, so why not use it ?

Soviets captured by the Afghans received no mercy, some were skinned alive, not for intelligence, but for pleasure.

If torture does not get us good, actionable intelligence, then i do not see the point. We are the greatest nation on the planet because we hold to our ideals and morals even when it is difficult.
