Look for another line of work, I am afraid that you will be DQ'd for military service!

Good luck; I hope you never took ADD medication. That was one of the first question I was asked when I joined the Army (it disqualifies you).

My husband has AS. He is a crew chief on a black hawk helicopter. He does exceptionally well in the army. People in his chain of command have tried to get him to put in his packet (paperwork) to become a warrant officer but he chooses not to.

I have done extensive research on people with AS in the military. They tend to do great in mechanical or technical jobs as long as they are enlisted. In every case that I have studied they fell apart as soon as they became officers. This had a huge negative effect on their personal lives and on the military.

As for wether or not you will be accepted, it is on a case by case basis. The military doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists will put you through some pretty intense tests. If they think that you can handle the stress of deployment they will consider you. If they have even a slight doubt you will not be accepted. The important thing to remember is that in the military every thing you do effects everyone around you. If you have a melt down in a combat zone it could get people killed. Also, you can pretty much guarantee that you will have severe depression after a deployment. You will need to keep in careful contact with military doctors. You will also have to check in with your command on a regular basis (sometimes daily) to make sure that you are "playing it safe".

Many people with AS are an invaluable asset to the military. They do incredibly good work in technical, mechanical or even intelligence jobs.

Another thing to consider:
I know a man who found out that he has AS because he had a VERY bad reaction to a deployment. He seemed normal (just shy) before that. Since then he has been suicidal and has even done things that have put his family in danger. This is a very real possibility for anyone prone to depression. AS only makes that possibility even more likely. Please be careful. Remember that IF you are not ready to handle a deployment you could put a lot of people in danger. IF you are ready the military could be the best thing that ever happened to you!

I suggest talking to your doctor, your family and your recruiter about it.

based on the information about asperger's syndrome you have a lot to overcome and with perseverance you can do it. my son who is currently active duty army was diagnosed w/ ADD when he was 10 and still struggles with it, but he made it through basic!!

the military doesn't base it decisions on what people think, but on what they can prove.
the ADD won't keep you out but your might have to undergo a medical evaluation because of the AS

as for flying blackhawks- it will depend on your scores on the AFVAB test and youe eyesight as well.

GOOD LUCK IN YOUR ENDEAVORS!!
