At age 18 why can we go and die in a war but cant drink?

Do you really think that drinking is that big a thing? What do you want to be when you grow up, an alcoholic?

What I would be arguing for is my civil rights, specifically my right to keep and bear arms. You can go into the military and carry a machine gun in combat at 18, but you can't buy a pistol until you are 21.

Drinking is just going to get you in trouble. A firearm could save you life.

I've heard that part of the reason is that our livers aren't fully developed until we're about 21. Still... doesn't take away from the fact that plenty of our 17-20 year old (and those who TURNED 21 while at war not able to drink) military members have died before they could legally drink. I lucked out... was 17yrs old stationed in Germany and I could legally drink off-base! :) Drinking age used to be 18 in Louisiana, but the state was threatened with havning their funding cut for things like fixing roads... well, drinking age has been 21 for quite some time, and the roads are still crappy.

Because 18 year olds are not responsible enought to drink (okay not all but most) and when you join the military you're being watched over and being taught disipline.

Are you actually in a position where you can be sent to die at war? If not, then don't use it as an excuse. If so, I agree totally.

Depends what place you are in I guess. In Quebec the drinking age is 18 while the rest of Canada is 19. The United States is 21 (BRUTAL!). In Brazil and countries like that the age is about 16. Stupid rules that people don't really follow anyway.

I joined the military at age 18. Had no problem getting alcohol on base. Volunteer and join the service and you can drink on base (if things have not changed since then). Is drinking that important to you?

bc long time they had the drinkin age at 18 but to many people at that age were dying or something like that

Most bases have an EM, NCO or O Club too.

When I got back from NAM at almost 20 (two trips)the bartenders just somehow forgot to ask for ID; maybe it was attitude,maturity and rank.

Don't worry. It's extremely impolitic to drink alcohol in Muslim countries anyway, so you have nothing to worry about.

Hey, look at the bright side. You won't wake up from a blackout not knowing how you joined the army. You are also old enough to vote out those who say you can't drink. Your age group has the poorest voting record. Are you part of the problem?

Also you can't go die if you don't sign up.

Drinking Kills more Americans each year then the war, Many innocent peopl die in both. Also, Drinking will take your money and flush it down the drain. Military pays you money , money you will see tomarrow, Drinking does not teach leadership, teamwork, or ethic. and when that 18 year old get's out of the war. He'll be old enough to drink to forget.........

I'm assuming that you're in the States, where the legal drinking age is 21. In Canada, (and I'm assuming it would be similar in the US) National Defence falls under federal jurisdiction, and drinking age falls into provincial jurisdiction. Therefore, different rules apply. Here in Canada, you can sign up for the military when you're 18, regardless of where you live (I believe you may sign up if you're 17 if there's parental consent). Some provinces (Alberta, Manitoba and Quebec) one can also legally drink at 18, while the other provinces/territories, it's 19. It all depends on what the government responsible for the law deems a "responsible age". I'm in Alberta, and they've tried raising the drinking age to 19 but it's always failed. I guess the majority of people here think that if you're responsible enough to drive a car and hold a gun, you're responsible enough to drink.

Because you aren't responsible enough. You forgot to mention you can also VOTE, which is why this law got passed. It's because people forgot to teach teenagers the responsibility of driving, thinking that handing them a gun is more dangerous than handing them the keys to a two ton killing machine, which statistically poses a greater threat to your life than being sent off to war. And when I was your age I thought it stunk too.
