How did this battle affect the ANZAC troops, and what impact did it have on the success of the campaign?

Steely, you can read all about it at the URL shown below. This was another incidence of English generalship and Aussie casualties. There were errors in judgment and general planning, and the Aussies suffered for both.
There were seven Victoria Crosses awarded to the Aussies in this battle.
The effect on the Aussies can only be imagined, but I suspect that they increased their desires to be out from under English generalship. Far better that they just be given a task and let them carry it out themselves, rather than be told what to do and how.
This battle actually hindered the rest of the campaign, as it was to be a diversion, but brought more Turkish troops into the area, defeating its purpose.

All I know of the Gallipoli campaign is that it went horribly, that it was Winston Churchill's baby and pretty much ended his military career. He was however, able to recover by taking on the Grenederes and that instead of living like most C.O.s, he chose to remain in the trenches, eat and sleep with the men.
As for the ANZAC troops, they paid a horrible price.
In his political career, if ever you wanted to shut Churchill up, all you need do was mention the name "Gallipoli." |
