Best aircraft of world war II?

Any aircraft, fighter, interceptor, bomber, transport, or otherwise.
Any nation of origin, any point throughout the war. However, it must be understood that the aircraft must be compared only to the other aircraft at the time of its service. For instance, we cannot compare a ME 262 to a P-40.
Also, relevance is a key component of the "best aircraft" criteria
For instance: the fact that the ME 262 was too little too late would bar it from being dubbed the "best aircraft" of the greatest war the world has ever seen. Despite it being far more advanced than any other aircraft in WWII doesnt mean it was relevant enough to make a difference.

The DC3. Over 10,000 were made. It was a 2 engine cargo plane, also used for paratroop drops.
In many cases, front line troops were dependent upon DC3, for supplies., , the C47 as iklitary versions were known.
After the war, many were bought by airlines, and many served well into the late 60's and 70's. |

I reject the idea of a "best" anything, because there isn't. If I may make my point. Suppose you ask "what was the best fighter plane of WWII?" Someone might offer up the Supermarine Spitfire, and they would have a good argument. In what we today call ACM (air combat manuevering) it was one of the finest aircraft of the war. But what if the mission you need that fighter for is to fly bomber escort from southern England to Berlin? The Spitfire, for all its other attributes simply CAN NOT do that mission. For that particular role you need a different fighter, perhaps with lower ACM but much greater range - like the P-51 Mustang. That sort of thing follows into just about any other category of aircraft you can name. Different requirements produce different results, one is not necessarily better than another.
That said, my "favorite" aircraft of WW2 never saw action - the Martin Baker MB5. |
