Boyfriend's Military Records?
Find answers to your legal question.

Boyfriend's Military Records?

My current boyfriend is EXTREMELY cagey about his military past. I've caught him in many lies about what he did and where he was and even how he was discharged! I'd feel so weird doing this, but I kinda wanna see his military records. Is it a total violation of privacy? I dont really know about this kinda thing, but I get this feeling he did something really wrong (if he was in the military). How could I do this so it wont come back on me (like he could track it) and that it wont cost anything. Thank you!

Oh, and I've been going out with him for a few years, so we have quite a bit of history. This isnt just some random guy.

Ask him to see a copy of his DD214 or ask him what his RE and discharge codes are. With those you can tell allot. Other then that you could go to the archives site and request them, but it takes awhile and they may not give them up anyway.

Rawbert I hate to burst your bubble but parts of your military records are public information under the freedom of information act. So yes she can get some of his records.

He probably lied to you about being in the military to impress you. Otherwise I can see no reason for secrecy.

This might help ~ http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/index.html

You can't unless he gives them to you...

I think that trying to check up on him stirs some major trust issues outside of his alleged military service, frankly if I were him I'd either tell you to mind your own business or just tell you what was up.

There are some major issues if you need to go behind his back to the national archives and seek out his records. Sounds like you need to re-evaluate your relationship with each other.

As for his records.......
You can request some (they will only give you certain information because you are NOT the next of kin or the Service member) of his Service record. Before they will even consider processing a request for his records you will be REQUIRED to provide them with ALL of the following information:
•The veteran's complete name used while in service
•Service number
•Social security number
•Branch of service
•Dates of service
•Date and place of birth (especially if the service number is not known)
•The purpose or reason for your request, such as applying for veterans benefits, preparing to retire, or researching your personal military history.

The only info they will give you as a general member of the public from his records is the following
•Name •Service Number •Dates of Service •Branch of Service
•Rank and Date of Rank •Salary * •Assignments and Geographical Locations •Source of Commission * •Military Education
•Promotion Sequence Number * •Awards and decorations (Eligibility only, not actual medals) •Duty Status •Photograph •Transcript of Court-Martial Trial •Place of entrance and separation

To get info on how to request info go to http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/public/general-public.html

I would be concerned, but not to the point of letting it affect your relationship. and yes, motoguy, its her business if she's been going out with the guy for years! if he did something freaky she should know what kind of man he is!

mom of many
unless he shows you the papers or info then you will have no way to get this info. About all I can suggest is talk to his parents or siblings

Its HIS business

some people want to forget things they have done in the military.

screw this sht if u cant ask him for it then break up because obviously there is a deeper problem than records here
