Brown to launch a US Vietnam style invasion of Pakistan?

A couple of days ago Gordon Brown launched a new strategy document "The Way Forward" in Afghanistan & Pakistan. Introducing this document he stated the cost of this 'war' is expected to rise to £3 billion this year. Speaking of ' a chain of terror links the mountains of Afghanistan & Pakistan to the streets of Britain'. He refused to rule out the use of uk forces with the international boundaries of Pakistan.' To me, this seems a risky proposal given the already unstable state of Pakistan's political system. An enlargement of any such engagement could run the risk of neighbouring countries becoming involved. Both India & Pakistan have viable nukes, so has China. Has Brown lost the plot more than usual. Does Obama approve? Does Obama know?

I'm no Gordon Brown fan, but it's a brave man or an idiot who says 'never' and he's neither.

I can see small scale raids being made inside Pakistan and to be honest I wouldn't be at all surprised if we had a few SAS type reconnaissance teams in there already looking for training camps, bases etc.

That's a fair way from sending the troops in properly and anyway do you want an enemy to know that we had 'ruled out' attacking them in Pakistan ?

Like most politicians Brown has never been in the Services and with his well known refusal to listen to advice from people who do know this could be a disaster. Together with Bliar he plotted and lied over the war in Iraq and what a disaster that has been if the truth is told.History teaches that there are never any winners in wars in Afghanistan and we will do no better. Like the Russians we will in the end leave Afghanistan humiliated.

Brown was talking about "The Boundaries of Pakistan" which borders with Afghanistan. The hills in that area are full of the Taleban and it is still Afghan territory, not Pakistan! He could never "Invade" Pakistan, unless he had it sanctioned by The UN, and furthermore, we couldn't afford it, or have the manpower to undertake such an operation.
Now can you please explain what you mean by a "US Vietnamese Style Invasion" I have never heard that phrase before. AS far as I am aware, the US was invited to help South Vietnam against the North. It was a build up of American troops and equipment, not an Invasion.

If your report is true, it just shows how deep the British government is putting itself. The Americans and the British think that they can put a stop to terrorism by invading countries where there is a huge presence there. In a small positive way it might work but looking at it logically, if they continue to bombard Middle eastern countries, they are only going to make more people angry and thus join the terrorists until the terrorists pull off a big and surprise attack and devastate the world!
He shouldn't go into pakistan - it will only make things worse! the western countries are only going to weaken themselves even further and make themselves even more vulnerable!
All it takes is one huge terrorist attack to devastate the world, bigger than 9/11 or any of them!

Invaded Iraq after initial success drawn out stalemate slog, because if anyone thinks that Iraq wont be back in the hands of terrorist very quickly after the alliance withdraws, they are very much mistaken,
Invaded Afghanistan it has never been beaten by anyone ask the ruskies, as for taking on Pakistan not a hope in hell, and Mr Brave heart Brown will be back in his retirement home in bonny Scotland by next June and Cameron doesn't have bottle for another unwinnable war.

Who says we don't already have troops there? A while ago we sent "training & mentoring" teams to bolster Pakistani border forces specifically in the North West region, all at the behest of their government.

One has to wonder what will Obama do if that happens? I know that the British are very independent, but would they ask for any assistance from the US?
