Can't we just pick up and leave Iraq to her own devices ?

one dominant group will emerge , that will require money , the only source of which is oil , so they must sell it at some point . Surely all our money and effort could be directed elsewhere , perhaps at finding oil in our own backyard or making batteries that are better equiped at powering cars. Additional Details many good intelligent comments , thankyou all .

We can, but then the same people who are complaining about us being there will probably complain that we just up and left. |

If we leave now all the lives lost will have been in vain...
No one likes war but if we turn a blind eye to the injustice that is going on over there pretty soon we will have terrorists walking the streets over here and what happened on 9-11 will be a everyday occurrance... |

we do have oil, just a very low supply. And we cant just leave iraq, it would be a waste of time, not to finish what we went there for.. |

Iiving in a perfect world
watch the results, when you leave it in caos. never mind what happens to the US influence in the World and how many other government in the area end up in crisis if not outright fall. But ts nice to dream the world is a friendly place, but then reality strikes and you realize that 1/2 of the world is actually at war on any given day. there is usually about 100 wars going on in the Real world at any given time. |

We could, if we wanted to. I suppose in the short run, it might save a few dollars.
But, if we did, the rest of the world would view us a chicken - and so would many of the troops who've been there.
No one would trust us to back them up, if we needed them (like the UK).
Sooner or later, we would have to defend our own shores from terrorists and muslin radicals, and the fight would be at home. We would be drilling all that oil for them. In short, if we don't stand up now, there will be no money later and no America. |

Most of the same people who want us out of Iraq block us from drilling for oil in our own back yard.
And pulling out of Iraq would not only cause Iraq to implode, but it would cause problems throughout the Middle East, and it would be looked on by terrorists that we have no long term fight, thereby guaranteeing attacks against the US and our allies.
john...and the pathetic thing is that Muslims are involved in about 95% of them. Quite active this "religion of peace" |

us is too afraid of another vietnam, and the iraqi army/law enforcement isnt ready enough to handle thse guydudes
if we leave now, iraq will be overrun by terrorists now is not the best time we leave, but i think we had a lot of chances to leave before |

Sure. We can just pick up and leave. But don't deceive yourself about the consequences.
You'll have civil war, chaos and bloodshed. Eventually, you'll have some radical islamic group like the Taliban take over, and provide a haven and even start sponsoring terrorism with those oil revenues you mentioned.
In my opinion, if we just up and leave without leaving a stable Iraq behind, we'll just have to go back in 5 - 10 years or so, after being attacked again.
We'll also have to deal with the loss of fear from our enemies around the world. Pulling out will confirm that the USA is weak and has no stomach for war and serious losses. Just drag it out long enough and inflict a few thousand casualties, and you'll win. |

Many people are in agreement. This region of the world has always been in turmoil and the troops occupying the area are not the answer to political restructure. Their role seems to be damage control. Because of the inner conflict, UN negotiations would probably be more productive or persuasive. Those opposing withdrawal do have a valid concern regarding what kind of regime will take over; however the nation can not begin to develop until the Iraqis begin to handle their own affairs. It's their battle and no other country can control the long-term outcome. It is true also that the US should shoulder some responsibility for dismantling the Iraq government and creating such destruction but we've spent years rebuilding. At this point, the Iraq citizens need to become more independent in handling their affairs. Obviously, we don't have an endless supply of financial resources and the private contractors are the only ones seeing any gain from our continued involvement. |
