Can I claim my disabled (blind) mother as a dependent in the Air Force?

I'm joining the Air Force as of Oct 2009...and I'm not sure on whether or not I would be able to claim my mom as a dependent so that she come with me and I can assist her in her daily living. She is separated and in the process of being divorced. I am her oldest child and the only one that is really able to help care for her. The recruiter says that if you're single w/ dependents then you don't qualify to join...but another recruiter said that when I get to my 1st station that I could file for a hardship and have my mom brought on as a dependent.

Can anyone give me some clarification on this???

it is NOT easy to add secondary dependents. basically you need to provide at least 51% of all her expenses for a year before you can begin the process. It takes on average about 2 years to get it approved.

and if you have ANY other family it will likely be denied unless you can prove they are incapable( as opposed to unwilling) to take care of her.

she can be claimed if you provide 85% (not sure about exact percentage) of her income. Or a hardship in which you can go to a base close to her. But it's all up to MPF and AFPC to see if you can actually do it. it's pretty much case by case basis. when you get to your first base start asking around, if you have a good supervisor they'll be able to help you out.

This is not a simple yes or no question. There are cases where parents can be claimed as dependents...but there are restrictions on it.

I believe that the recruiters are being honest and that you can not join if she is already a legal dependent...but if you get to a duty station and try to claim her then I don't know how that will work. You usually have to wait to claim parents anyways.

You do need to realize that you would run a risk of being separated if you file a hardship...I can't say for sure that that would happen.
