My son is a single parent with three young children and he's been in the Navy ten years now. He has to be able to do the difficult work of a single parent and his Navy duties, which is hard. Also he has to have someone who can take care of the children when/if he deploys. As long as he has a plan in place to care for his children he's fine.
Typically in order to go in the Navy will require you to demonstrate that you have someone who will care for your children until you complete A school, and they'll want them to sign in blood for that since they don't want to invest money in you if you might suddenly have to get a hardship discharge. Usually there's a relative who takes custody of the kids.
Giving them custody in this sense is NOT a big deal, you can do it with a power of attorney or in many states an appointment of guardian can be done without a court order. Depends on where you are though. |

probably not but the reserves may be something to look at, but you still may not be able to get in, it all depends on you local MEPS if there strict or not, louisville MEPS is the hardest to get into so avoid it |

Yes but, and it's a big one. You must find someone you really trust, I mean trust with your life, and sign over guardianship of your children, so that there is a plan in effect when you get sent off to schools or deployed in a war zone or an unaccompanied tour...on a ship. If you are willing to do that and you know there wont be a problem getting the child/children back, ie an ex-souse or parent think long and hard before you do it.

Not if you have sole custody. If you get married, or if somebody else (such as your parents perhaps) have custody of the kid for at least 12 months, then you can join. Contact a recruiter for more details, but it is pretty hard to do. |

If you give up custody you can. Unless you marry or the person who you give custody to dies you cannot regain custody until your command says so, or your first term of enlistment is up. |
