Can US armed forces travel to germany with mil ID card if they are not stationed there?

I am a US permanent resident and i want to know if just having my military ID card is good enough to travel to germany?

All the people who said you need a passport are wrong if you have leave orders stating the address you are going to in Germany, england or any place that usually is close to a base, you can travel with your leave orders and military ID card. There are some countries which you cannot. Also you have to fly on an international flightline. Like ryan air you need a passport but if you are flying delta or Lufthansa etc... you can use leave orders and id card. If you are flying into germany through frankfurt you will have no problem what so ever. i was stationed there for 4 yrs and also jsut got back from leave in germany and i didn't use my passport. Also it is good to check with the airline, what documents a military member needs. I have gotten through customs every single time with mil id card and leave orders. So you are good! This is just for active duty, military spouse and military civilians need passports!!

If you're not on official deployment orders you will need a passport to enter the country.

ETA: Shock.... The regs changed in mid 08... at one time you could travel overseas if Active duty with just your Military ID but that isn't the case anymore. They now requires that EVERYONE has a passport when traveling out of the US if not on official orders meaning deployment, TDY or PCS (it doesn't cover dependents when on a PCS they must get a passport) regardless of Military status.

No, I don't think so. You used to be able to travel on an ID and orders, but I think they have even stopped all that because of terrorism and security.

I'm almost positive you'll need a passport.

Generally, all non-EU nationals will need a passport for entry. The notable exception regards authorized members of the U.S. military, who need to possess only a copy of their duty orders and their ID card to be authorized entry. The passport requirement, though, applies to spouses and dependents of military personnel. The passport will outweight the military ID card at customs if you use one. If you show a military ID and have no orders and leave form DA 31 (if in the Army), the officials there can give you problems, especially when it's time to leave for home. Remember we have many servicemembers going back and forth on R&R from CENCOM or other deployments. They don't all have passports either. I know from deploying and also being wounded and going through to Landsthul during my OEF and OIF tours.

Also I know a little abot thsi because of the AWOLs we've had to process in the past. You also need it for certain former Eastern Bloc countries if you drive into them. Passports the way to go if you want to separate yourself from any military ties and just be an American citizen travelling.

And of course what do I know, I only worked in Legal Assistance and Crim Law while stationed there. 25 min for the Flughafen at Frankfurt International in Freidberg and Darmstadt.

that depend if you're on active duty or not. active duty you need DA 31 and if you're reservist or guardmen you need two form along with your military card. retired you need passport to travel overseas.

If you are on an official travel you can use either your official(military) passport, or military ID and orders, or tourist passport. However, If you are going on PCS or TCS orders or assigned to the Emabssy that's when things chamge a little. Look at the foreing travel guide/pentagon and you will find all the answers you need
