Can You Switch Branches After 4 years of enlistment?

im just curious but if i was in the navy or air force, after 4 years would i be able to switch branches or can this not happen? if it is a possibility do you have to go through baisc again and would you lose rank?
has anyones done or thought of doing this before?

Sure. My husband served 3 years in the Navy, then another 18 years in the Air Force.

It is possible to do. I have had shipmates that were prior service air force, army and marines. They said the principle factors is age , and the type of discharge. |

Yes you can, if you chose to go Marines though after four years, you have to go to boot camp and you lose rank in the Marines. Should you choose to go say, Navy or Army after four years in the Marines, you would retain your rank or even get promoted, and also, do not have to go to their boot camp. You typically cannot switch from Marines to Air Force though unless your MOS in the Marines was a MP or something of that nature because of how harsh the Marines make you. You can even have another branch of the service buy your contract out before your time is up depending on how bad they want you. Personally, I wouldn't switch braches though. It's best to pick an MOS and brach of service and become as proficiant in that art as possible.

Yes, but most stay in same in branch if the re-enlist. From the little I heard there is no need to repeat basic training. That most of what I heard is going from regular to reserves in the same branch or vice-a-versa. |

Currently the military is even getting picky taking pack prior service unless you have a critical MOS, need no medical waivers and have a RE1. AF rarely takes PS.
Normally you will lose rank but it depends what rank you got out with and for how long you been out. |

Yes you can switch branches after your contract is up, but it is a different story about keeping your rank. Depends if you are able to get the proper transfer or not. |
