Can anyone recently in or out of the U.S. Air Force answer some questions for me?

Well, my boyfriend has decided he wants to go into the air force as soon as he graduates high school, and to eventually be a pilot. He's a sophomore in high school (I'm two years older), and the recruiters won't talk to him until next year. I'm a little impatient to find out what his options are, and honestly, I don't totally trust recruiters to tell people what will MOST LIKELY happen, rather than what they want you to THINK will happen... so I thought someone who's recently been there could tell me.
I know that one option is for him to go into the Academy in Colorado Springs, and I understand that if he does that, he will come out with a considerably higher rank than if he were just to enlist without going... or this is what I've been told.
So my first question is... if he doesn't go to the academy, what will most likely be his starting rank? What kinds of things will he have to do? What privileges will he have?
I also know that in my home state of California, we have ROTC, and people who take part in that in high school also have the opportunity to get a head start on their military career. We live in Minnesota though, and as far as he knows, they don't have anything like that here. Does anyone know if there are such programs for high school students here?
My main question though, I don't know what factors will affect it... but I want to know, will he have any sort of choice as to where he's stationed? I really know nothing about working one's way up the ranks. I know that Edwards Air Force Base is near my home in Cali, but I don't know if it's a testing facility, or a training facility, or what... my main concern is him having to go overseas. I realize that if we're still at war (are we even at war? Never can tell these days) that he may have to. But I don't know, I wasn't under the impression that planes were really being used in the Iraq war that much. But, assuming that we are at peacetime when he gets out of training... how likely is it that he will be able to stay in the States? And will I be able to go with him, wherever he goes? (Except for boot camp, obviously).
And, how many places are there where he might be sent for training? And how long does it take?
I realize I could find some answers to these questions online, or talking to recruiters... but I don't really trust recruiters or statistics. I'd really like to know from someone who's been through it.
If there is no one, perhaps someone can at least direct me to a forum where I might find such people?

WOW...that's a lot of questions. If he wants to be a pilot then he can also join the Navy they have a better flight program. But he's got to be the best of the best and the smartest of the smart! He's got a better chance of being a pilot if he is accepted into some sort of military academy.
When it comes to where he's stationed, he will have the ability to put down where he would like to go but if the military needs him somewhere else, then thats where he goes.
He will also have to eventually do some sort of tour overseas. Whether or not its to the middle east, korea, or europe is never known until he gets his orders.
EDIT: If he joins straight out of high school and does not go to a military academy, he'll be a private...basically the bottom of the totem pole. Goes to an acedemy, he'll come out an officer.
There's no telling what kind of stuff he'll have to do if he enlists...its all up to what he enlists for and what he trains for.
Contact the school board in your area about the JROTC program. ROTC is in college.
The only way you get to go with him is if you're married. If you're not married, you can move with him on your own dime and becuase of his age he will have to live in the barracks.
Training: No telling how long training is...again it depends on what he signs up to do. They do training all over the country. Example: Naval Flight School is Pensacola Naval Air Station in Pensacola, FL. But then airforce might be different. |

Yes, if he goes to the Air Force Academy he will graduate and become an officer (2nd lieutenant). That is not the only way of becoming an officer though, ROTC is the most common route which is taken while in college. JROTC is a high school program and isn't really beneficial in becoming an officer besides preparing one for the Academy or ROTC by learning basic drill. It does help enlisted gain a rank or two though upon enlistment.
As far as where he gets stationed, it could be anywhere depending on what job he gets. And going overseas is fun, especially if it involves getting stationed in Europe where there are a lot of Air Force bases. Being deployed is the not so fun part. Since he's a high school sophomore, (assuming he gets a pilot slot) he will probably be flying sorties for the Air Force in 7 years. I'm sure by then we won't have nearly as many deployments going on. |

I am not sure aboout the Academy. Or about what rank he will be because it depends on what he decides to do when it comes to signing up. ROTC will get him E-3 starting out but he could also get E-3 by signing up for 6 years. You asked if he has a choice where he will be stationed at: no. You make a "dream sheet" when your at basic. You list I certain bases you would LIKE to go to, but it's the military and they will send him wherever they need him. If he's active duty (not reserve or guard) he would be stationed at the base closest to home. As far as you and him being able to be together, if you guys get married and you plan on being a civilian while he's enlisted then you would be able to move with him on base (or off base) after he gets out of basic and tech school. Basic is 8 12 weeks and his tech school all depends on what job he gets. I am Security Forces, so my tech school was 14 weeks while my husband's tech school (He's in Ammo)was only 8 weeks. So, there's no set in stone answer to how long he will be gone until he gets his job. Also, it doesn't matter what job he gets, he COULD still deploy. Like I said though, it depends on his job. My job deploys at least once a year in most cases, while other people's jobs (Services) might only deploy once in their 4 year term. But deployment isn't so bad from what I heard, it's good money, and it's your time to focus on yourself. Good luck to you guys!! |
