Can anyone recommend where I would fit in in the armed forces (UK)?

I want to join up as an Officer after I graduate in the summer at age 21/22, but am unsure what to do- I have read all the glossy brochures at the recruiting office but would also like to hear from some serving or ex personnel. So here goes...
I am good fitness-wise, running 5 miles a day and also president of the Uni boxing club. I don't drink except on a night out (when I tend to get hammered) and only smoke then too. My degree isn't relevant to anything science-based like engineering.
I don't want to fly, preferring ground work- I am a keen outdoorsman and hiker. Nothing phases me on civvy street, I avoid fights through talk but if they're inevitable I get stuck in. I like being in the thick of things and like my encounters up close and messy. I used to be quite wayward so enjoy discipline now and like pushing my limits.
I think something like infantry would suit me but would like to be a little more challenging/ unusual, but the Marines are out.
Suggestions? Thanks! Additional Details Thanks for all help and serious answers- those that aren't to the point will be reported.

you sound like you would enjoy something like the infantry or , if you have the bottle , try for the paras.
you need not stay in forever , but the experience you gain will stay with you forever and stand you in good stead whatever your final chosen career might be.
all the best. |

thats quite a contridiction in terms, "I don't drink except on a night out (when I tend to get hammered)"
I think you sound like a fine candidate for the armed services, u kind of fit the stereo type for a soldier, ur not too clever and u like fighting.
Maybe the lesson you could learn here is that there is no "us and them" As a species, we are fighting ourselves, like the left hand fighting with the right hand. If you reflect on that it may change your perception of what you want to enter into. The most important journey, the one to our own awareness, bon voyage! |

Here are a few ideas, if not the usual.
1) Pioneer Corps are worth a look.
2) Airborne RLC
3) RAF Regiment
The other thing is that your degree does not have to be relevant to go into signals, engineers or REME. Bomb disposal is quite a challenge. |

If you have a serious interest in joining the army I would suggest you pay a visit to your nearest recruiting office. They will have all the information about all the Corps and regiments and also know where there are vacancies. You have a degree and are obviously an educated person Why don't you join R.E.M.E. and learn a technical trade? This would give you something to fall back on when you leave the service. If you find this a little boring as a long term plan you could take a course with the Parachute regiment and become a R.E.M.E.- Para. This would, of course mean you would be airborne. I notice that Internat suggest you join the SBS, Special Boat Service. To do this you must first complete 2 years service with the colours. You must also undergo a special forces selection with the Special Air Service before you can continue to Special Boat Service selection. All these things you will find out about at an Army information office. Best of luck. My service as a R.E.M.E.- Para finished a long time ago in 1966. I am now way out of date. |

You're not Officer material if you "get stuck into fights if they are necessary" - you need to behave impeccably at all times! |

Give SBS a shot. See if you got the mettle. You like the outdoors, you will get belly full. |

Ok,first things first. Yes,you have a degree, very commendable. However, unless you want to be sorting out soldiers administration and mainly concentrating on paperwork I would recommend starting at the bottom.
For technical, you have the REME. There are several different trades within the REME,mainly vehicle based. You could be a VM A, which means you would be a mechanic specialising in armoured vehicles. Or a VM B where you would specialise in wheeled vehicles.
Royal Corps of Signals. These specialise in communications, and have quite a few trades at the moment. Unfortunatly, some of these trades are due to amalgamate, so there will be less to choose from. The major one at the moment is Information Systems Engineer (or IS operator). This is all computer based, and after passing a course it gives you a part degree(or along those lines, dont quote me on that). Also,if you join the Signals, you can join the signals special forces. They have their own paras and SAS,so you get the best of both worlds. A trade and special forces training.
Ok,I dont really want to go into all the cap badges, but the info is out there. If you let me know what you want to specialise in,I will probably be able to help a lot more. Look at the Engineers also, for technical trades you cant go wrong. Just remember, just because you have started at the bottom,it doesnt mean you cant become an officer if thats what you wish to do. There are ways and means of becoming an officer at pretty much any point in your career, whether it be 4 years into your service or at your 22 year point, where you can become a long service officer(in laymans terms).
Please get in touch if you need any more information about any part of your enlistment in the Armed Forces.
Good luck on whatever you decide to do |

why not try to get into the pti corps? you do adventure training and that. and you get some good offers to go abroad and do some sports. i went climbing in spain & argentina,it was great and didnt cost much as it was done by army. and in the gym you can push your limits( and those of others!) every day |
