Watching documentary on WW1 & WW11 & Korea & Vietnam the US troops seem to spend as much time picking up their helmets as fighting. Now I have often wondered why this happens & if anyone has the answer can you please let me know.

Today, you wear the chin strap for your Kevlar helmets all the time. Back in the day, the logic behind it was that the concussion of an artillery shell hitting close by was enough to rip your steel helmet right off your head. If your chin strap was secured, then it would come flying off anyways, with your head still attached to it.
I'm not sure I believe that logic. I think you'd have to be pretty close to the explosion for the shockwave to generate that kind of force on your helmet...close enough to where a decapitation would probably be the least of your worries.

I was not in any war but i would guess that if you have your helmet strapped to your head and the enemy gets a clean shot at you,the force of an impacting bullet wont pierce the helmet but would break your neck having it loose may in a way leave space enough not to do that.hope you can see the principal |

Mostly because it looked cool. I can only speak to my experinces in that when I went into combat my helmet was chin strap was on. I would argue that most soliders of the past also did. |

In the movies, they do because it looks cool. I agree with Mac, try wearing one for 24/7. In real life, the chin strap is worn when on OPs. Its not a fashion accessory, it serves a purpose. |

If a grenade or other such explosive goes off near you, the shockwave can force air into the gap between your helmet and your head. If you don't fasten you chin strap, the helmet will simply lift off your head, if the strap is fastened, it could snap your neck as the helmet is forced upwards. That's why... |

From a British perspective, when you have your helmet on, you do the chinstrap up. If you're not gong to have the chinstrap done up- take the helmet off. Any benefits (which I'm dubious of anyway) of wearing the helmet without the chinstrap done up are far outweighed by the disadvantages. |
