i speak, write and understand spanish at a 100%, no accent either, in fact its my first language. ive heard u can get extra money for that once u take a proficiency test or whatever. does any one know how much money that is a paycheck? aprox?
also the cryptologist rating, would i be able to qualify for that if my spanish is fluent? do i get other types of benefits? like a sign on bonus or something? i know they probably need fluent spanish speakers because of the tension with cuba, colombia and venezuela and other drug trafficking countries in south america. right?
anybody with experience on this?.

Fluency in another language other than English is always a benefit. Your pay is based on your rank. Allowances are given for service aboard ship, overseas, in flight duty, Temporary duty and a few others. I have not heard of anyone getting a bonus or special pay because they speak another language. Some are assigned TAD to another command to assist with interpretation, but the TAD would be paid even if they only drove a truck.
You may ask your command about attending the Defense Language Institute, to learn another language. Ask to take the DLAB, Defense Language Aptitude Battery.
I have not heard of any special pay, but I have seen foreign language speakers assigned as interpreters for Commands, depending on the situation. Crypto ratings encompass a wide range of things. Ask the S2 shop's commander.
Spanish speakers in the Armed Forces are common. I knew quite a few Sailors who were Philipino, that spoke English, Tagalog and Spanish when I was in the Marines. |

Yes, above poster is right, you can only receive extra pay if the language is in "demand."
And secondly, you have to be filling a billet specifically for the reason of your language skills.
The pay's called "Foreign Language Proficiency" you can still take the test to qualify and be registered as a member that is fluent, doesn't mean they'll ever need to use you for it. |

the best thing to do is to ask at a defence force recruiting office. if you live in the States there's probably one in your town/city or at the very least a city only an hour or two away. |

They have a list of the languages that you can make money off of and I know German isn't one and i dont think spanish is either. it is the more middle eastern languages now.
