Can my weight for the military be waived?
|
Im a 19 year old female who wants to join the army by the end of this year. Im 5'4 and weigh 155lbs, from my understanding i have to be at the most 149lbs. If i can run the 2 miles in 18:40 or under and do the minimum of 19 push ups or more along with the minimim or more of sit ups, can my weight be waived? I would preferably like military experience to answer. Thanks Additional Details ohh. and my waist is a 34' the widest part of my hips is a 40' my wrist is a 6' and my neck is a 13'. I do work out regulary also. im not sure if this helps, i just dont know how i would figure out my body fat %

Yes, if you are over your maximum weight we will measure your body fat by measuring your neck, the smallest part of your waist, and the largest part of your hips. If you are at or below 32% bodyfat you can still join but you will have to lower your bodyfat prior to the completion of AIT, or your job training.
ADDED: Oh, I'm just a clueless Soldier who doesn't know what he's talking about and civilians who have nothing to do with recruitment know more about enlistment standards than me. It has NOTHING to do with MEPS, it is Army regulation to measure bodyfat if she's over her max weight and if she comes in at or below 32% she can get in. All the thumbs down in the world won't change that fact. Also, accession standards are lower than retention standards. You can join at or below 32% but in order to complete AIT you have to go down to 30% or less.
ADDED 2: We changed the method for measuring females a few years ago. We no longer measure the wrist, we only do your hips, neck, and waist. Just see a recruiter tomorrow and she'll measure you so you can know where you are and if you need to loose anything. |

Your APFT score is meaningless when dealing with weight in the Army. What they do is compare your numbers against the screeing table first, which you've said you fail. At that point they check your percentage of body fat by doing a tape test. For a female they use a tape measure to check the circumference of your waist, neck and hips. They put the numbers into a formula and come up with a body fat percentage. If you're over the table on this, it's a no go.
Paragraph 3-1c, table 3-2 of AR 600-9, updated 27 Nov 2006 lists the maximum allowable body fat for a female aged 17-20 to be 30%
Updated: I'm sorry, with the measurements you gave, your number is 37%, using the formula in the regulation. This really should be no problem, though, you're only 6 pounds over the screening table. Talk to some of your high school wrestlers about how to lose weight quickly and temporarily, believe me they are experts. Even if you bounce back immediately after, you're good.
Just FYI, the formula is waist plus hips minus neck, you then take this number and look in the table in appendix B of the regulation and find where it crosses with your height, that gives you what THEY think you're body fat is. (Take the actual number with a huge grain of salt). See the link for the pdf file of the reg.
And AD was right the reg changed in 2006, they used to measure the wrist and forearm as well, not any more. |

I would lose the weight before you go to meps. Since you work out it may just be body fat. But no your weight will not be waived. Do some extra cardicardiodrink water no sweets. |

from my understanding there is NO waiver, and least of all for a weight issue, regardless of being able to do what they require you MUST be under the weight limit and within the BMI. Good grief it is only 6 lbs, why waste effort and time for that tiny amount. |

no. you must meet weight standrads or you do not ship.
your PRT scores have no bearing. you either meet ALL the requirements, or you do not.
NOT EVERY MEPS station will do Body Fat measurements. its weight standrds or bust. |

If your 5' 4" and weigh a buck 50 then I hope to GOD your a female bodybuilder or you'll most likely be over the BMI for the service but you still have the chance to lose some FAT ! |
