Can somebody in the army tell me a little about what a physical therapist experiences when deployed?

I'm about to graduate a DPT program and I am leaning heavily towards signing a contract with the Army. I have been told to take some things that recruiters say with a grain of salt. Basically I just want to know how dangerous it would be for me if I were to be deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan.

I am currently deployed in Iraq and share an office space with the PT department. It is a 3 man team one therapist and 2 techs. We are in a hard stand building with A/C and running water. They see scheduled patients mon-fri and have weekends off. We have a TV in our waiting room and a fridge. We go to the gym during lunch and hang out after work. We have a movie theater, swimming pool, gym, subway, coffee shop, KFC, burger king, Cinnabon, church, volleyball courts etc.
It is like living at home but without alcohol. Afganistan might be a different story since more people are getting injured but still you would not be doing rehad on wounded warriors in theater, they would be doing all that in Germany or the States. You would still be doing back injuries, knee pain, shoulder pain etc |

Recruiters are generally pretty honest about stuff. Usually the people who bag on recruiters are people who didn't listen or are general malcontents.
If you can get into some kind of military physical therapist program and you deploy then you'll work in a big hospital on a big base and you'll eat ice cream every day and get fat talking to your wife/gf on webcam every night. |

WELL ITS A WAR ZONE SO EVEN IF YOUR JOB IS MAKING COOKIES YOU CAN GET BOMBED AND DIE! You realize this right? You most likely wont be on the front lines, but take everything a recruiter says with a grain of salt- their job is to get you in-listed- they do not really care about you- I grew up in a military family I have seen it all, my guy was in the navy and he was told he could have a certain career path- but once he was in he was not allowed that because it was not available to any noobs.
Its just a choice you have to decide you want to make or not. If you are not sure you can always start with reserves and transfer over to fully in, but you can not go the other way around. |
