Can someone please tell me why we are in Iraq?

Someone on this board seems to think we need to end the war in Iraq because its cost us a lot of money. Please tell this person WHY we need our troops in Iraq...I don't think he gets it. Educated people only please. Thanks

Jason H, you seem to have the most understanding and most educated response. Thanks

Why are we here? To simply stop terrorists from causing terror in the world. To end violence in this world so that someday, our children, their children, and their children's children, are safe from harm and destruction that these people plan to inflict on us all. Another thought to think of, would you rather fight the terrorists here, or in Iraq?

Also, why do people think that in 5 years, 4000 dead soldiers are a reason to pull out? It is a tragedy to lose any person's life but in all seriousness, 4000 in 5 years isn't bad at all. Almost more people died in one day on the D-Day invasion than this whole war put together.

Well, the real reason we are in Iraq is becuase Bush wanted to get Saddam. He said in 1999 he was going to get Saddam "because he tried to kill my daddy" so he got his revenge.

Cause they have weapons of mass destruction...no no wait, because they helped with 9/11....no no, nobody is buying that one anymore, um...oh we have to get rid of their oppressive dictator..woo hoo. Well, now what...hmm...Iraqi Freedom! That's what we'll call it now...now, well we can't leave now...Iraq is a frickin mess! How did that happen??

Educated: graduate student in political science -

We don't need troops in Iraq. In the five years we have been present in Iraq, over 4,000 people have died. Our initial reason for being present in Iraq was to search for Weapons of Mass Destruction - none were found. Then we took it upon ourselves to involved our troops and the troops of other democratic nations to "clean up" the current disorder in Iraq and to make a more peaceful, democratic nation - in other words, we were working toward the Theory of Democratic Peace, which states that democratic nations will not fight other democratic nations. However, the death toll is rising, and the order in Iraq is not increasing nearly as much as the death toll - and that 4,000 number only includes American soldiers, the number of innocent and maybe not-so-innocent Iraqis has yet to be decided. So, why are we there? The standing explanation is to assist the Iraqis in instituting and maintaining peace within their political system, so that democratic countries, like the US and Western Europe are no longer threatened by vagabond terrorists. Is this working? You can be the judge, but many political scientists, politicians, and analysts seems to think we are repeating the Vietnamese War - which just ended in a large number of casualties and no real solutions.

To the asker: If there is another terrorist attack, the last question I would ask would be why did we pull out? I would be asking why there are crazy, insane people in the world who are intent on causing a raucous in Western, Christian states? Since the 1900s, there have been four waves of terrorism - for each associated decade or era, every act of terrorism has been severe and unprecedented. This is how the world works, sweetheart - nothing is going to change dissent against our country, or against Western Europe, or Asia or any other country/region in the world. There will always be a nation or region who will love to hate us - and vice versa! Our presence in Iraq will neither change or alter that. Please read a book, any book, related to the actual workings of politics and this war and you willl understand this

All "wars" should come to an end at some point. Firstly for the horrendous loss of life.

The damage is done there so now there's no way out.

Meanwhile wars are waged all over the world and attrocities happen to millions across the globe. In comparison to some Iraq is small fry, long and drawn out without a feasible conclusion.

Bankrupting much of America it has been expensive and will be even more so as more and more jobs are lost and interest rates and the U.S. Economy bellies up to support it.

The war might someday be won in Iraq and the troops will all come home but just what will many of them come home too? Closed factories, lost homes... This is likely how this person is thinking that you refer too, perhaps someone who has lost it all while so much is spent to help out people half away across the earth from them.

It's a difficult choice for all concerned but the damage was done and it's too late to do anything about it. Such was Korea, Vietnam, Northern Ireland, Eastern Europe, still not totally stable after hundreds of years of being invaded by another country.

Millions have died, billions spent and the cost when added up is open to criticism as it could be used to assist those that need it on American soil.

well i think that were in Iraq mostly for oil as others had said and also to try and restore order there and help them set up a functioning gov. so what happened to us and many other countries wont happen again.

My first deployment in 2003 I wasn't sure why I was there exactly, but in my last two deployments since I have realized that if we weren't in Iraq the country would be taken over by the thousands of terrorists that are there attacking us on a daily basis. If we leave all hell will break loose. As for the origional reason, I still wonder that myself sometimes.

Operation Iraqian Freedom. I believe that is what they called it. To help them obtain freedom from Saddam Hussein and his slaughterhouse and the build-up of nuclear weapons so we as American's could sleep at night. Also, to find weapons of mass destruction that I am sure they hid before they could be found. Also, after 9/11 we hit Afghanistan first not Iraq.

I think it's because Cheney had a grudge, plus it would be profitable for Haliburton, and W wanted to show up daddy. These two were already rattling their sabers for war in the summer of 2001, because I specifically remember talking to a friend about how they wanted to go to war against Iraq. 9-11 was merely an excuse.

Edit to add:

You asked, "why we are in Iraq?" As in, why did we invade Iraq, but your added comments seem to be asking why we are staying in Iraq. Because before we attacked, the country had a nasty dictator that did not have ties to the terrorists that did 9-11, or WMDs, nor was the country in danger of being over-run by terrorists. Saddam would have had them killed instantly.

We need to stay in Iraq to help hold up the country's infrastructure, until it can elect and build a strong enough government to withhold the Radical Islamic Fascists that wish to use it as a hot bed of terror and destruction. It's present government has requested, nay pleaded that we stay to help, and since we are the ones who created this situation for them we are obligated to do so until the time they ask us to leave. They are a culture built on hundreds of years of oppression and it will take more than 5 years of freedom for them to grasp the ability to take control of their own futures. If we leave now powerful murders will move in to wipe out the current government that has been VOTED in and will simply replace Saddam with an even harsher way of living for the Iraqis and dangerous ideologies for western freedoms. People forget the officials both Democratic and Republican that they elected voted for this war with an overwhelming majority, and just because they no longer have the backbone or it is no longer politically expedient they want to leave these people to die. Pulling out before a job is done is never good in any situation.

We can't take control over their oil supply without a puppet government, duh.

to find and destroy the terrorists! so we dont have another sept 11 or worse from those a**holes!

We are in Iraq because George Bush had a personal vendetta against Saddam. Saddam's no longer a problem, but there isn't a clear exit strategy or objective. People like you keep saying we need to win, although there is nothing to win in this case. Quite honestly, the Bush administration told 935 seperate lies to get us to wage war illegally in Iraq and our occupation there is illegal, yes even right now. But people seem to think that Al Qaida are from Iraq, even though the hijackers and Bin Laden are from a completely different country called Saudi Arabia. So we should have invaded Saudi Arabia, but they have made Bush a very rich man so that will never happen. So instead we're killing innocent Iraqi's and blowing up their kids -- which makes more terrorists. So the whole war is just creating what people like you are trying to avoid. I find it disturbing that you support this war and you don't even know why. That's the kind of thinking I keep running into and this kind of blind following of the administration is VERY SCARY.

I believe we're in Iraq because Saddan put a boundy on Bush Sr's head. Once we got into Iraq, there was no plan at all. One year lead into another without anything being done. Then people started asking the real question so something had to be done. It's a civil war and Bush has put our soldiers in Harms way, but He will never say it make a mistake because he doesn't want the Rep's to lose their power and now it's all about the OIL.
