Can you be in the air force with a GED?
Find answers to your legal question.

Can you be in the air force with a GED?

I really want to be in the air force but i just heard that if you have a GED you need to do a year of college in order to be in the air force or marines that these changes were just made?

is this true?

Each branch is allowed a limited number of GED holders only when they reach their max no more is offered for that year. If you have a GED with 15 college credits it is then handled like a regular high school diploma.

The reason a GED is not as accepted is because GED candidates tend to wash out at a higher rate. heck, I believe the GED was created by the armed forces to help get more recruits... but the GED had gotten so watered down that it didn't mean much. (THey have since upgraded the GED so it is more difficult and reflective of an actual high school equivilency). But statistics show that GED candidates are .... at least twice I think... as likely to quit training then high school diploma holders. I'm betting data shows that if you have college credits, then those do better.

The Air Force requires GED holders to have 15 college semester hours of credit to enlist.

It is not a new policy.

The services limit the number of Tier II candidates it will allow to enlist each year. In the Air Force, the limit is less than one percent each year. In such cases, the applicant must score a minimum of 50 on the AFQT to qualify (Note: The "AFQT" is the overall ASVAB score).

Test-based Equivalency Diploma Graduate: An applicant who possesses a GED or other test-based high school equivalency certificate or diploma. This includes, for example, statewide testing programs such as the California High School Proficiency Examination (CHSPE), whereby examinees may earn a certificate of competency or proficiency. A person who subsequently obtains a local or state-issued diploma solely on the basis of such equivalency testing is not considered as a Tier I high school graduate for the Marines, Army and Navy, but may (depending upon State laws) be considered as Tier I for the Air Force.

just score a 50 on the asvab and you will be fine

Yes I am not going into the airforce I went towards the navy but mostly all branches are breaking down right now becuase they are getting so full. I have seen people with GEDS get in recently but they have had college credits. I had a homeschool diploma and it was considered basicly a GED and they let me in becuase i had 22 college credits. Good Luck

Either that, or you have to score ridiculously high on the ASVAB. Air force is anal with GED's

Not unless the change has been really recent and really quiet. You can't be in the officer corps of any branch without a degree, but that doesn't block enlistment.
