Can you get back into the US Army after going AWOL?

Yes, but it all depends on what the company, battaltion, division commander decide to do. They would base their decisions on your previous record (do you have a history of disobedience?) or were there other migitating factors like severe family problems, etc. It also depends on how long you were gone (a few days, a week, several weeks?)

I had a soldier go AWOL for a week. Up to that time he was a stellar soldier, with a 300 PT score and 100% academic reports. We had no idea what went wrong. When he finally turned himself in we discovered he had flipped out when his long-lost mother, whom he hadn't seen in over ten years, shows up at his unit the night he was on CQ. The mother had originally left him years ago but wanted to come back into his life. He needed that week to think things over.

We all agreed that he had reasons to do what he did. So, his punishment was rather light: 30 days extra duty and down a rank. There was no courts martial or "brig" for him. Even his peers agreed with his punishment as he was a well-liked soldier. A year later he had gotten his old rank back and went to the promotion board. He was a fine soldier whom I still think about.

If you are awol; now--just turn yourself in--and you are still in. If you got a discharge for being awol--Why would they want to take you back??

You always know when you are supposed to be back. He screwed up for sure.

What I am not getting is the getting back in thing. If he had just had a misunderstanding he just would go back and face various penalties. The military has spent a huge amout of money on training him so they don't pitch you out right away if you have not had any other issues. It takes some time to deem someone as a deserter.

If you want to get a real answer you need to add more details.

There is no misunderstanding of how long your leave is as it is written on your Leave Papers.
Date your leave starts and the date it ends, what's to misunderstand.

Go back to your unit! This is something that will follow you for the rest of your life until you fix it. No matter what happens, you have to stand up and take your lumps. Be a man.

sure right after you go to the brig, but then you have to deal with desertion. and thats a whole other can of worms

i don't know but i heard you can go to jail for going awol. don't know if that's true or not. i doubt they would let you back in. you are a flight risk. lol

well, I thnk you would need rehab and then deemed psyhcologically stable to join again
