Community College before Navy?
Find answers to your legal question.

Community College before Navy?

My question is:
I am planning going into the Navy within the next few years. During which time I will be going into a local Community College. After those two years I'll more than likely go into the Navy for my term (4 years). After those years I'll probably finish my college to get a Bachelors degree.
I need to know whether or not while I'm at the Community College if I should get a General Studies Associate Degree or should I get the Associate of Information Technology. Which would put me into a better standing at the Navy. Because I want to go into Information Technology/Programming. higher enlisted rank?
Additional Details
So it doesn't matter what degree as long as I have college credit?

It doesn't matter,

An associates degree doesn't matter.

All the Navy will look at is how many college credits you have.

And your asvab score and line scores.

They do not look at what college class's you took.

Having an associates in a certain field, will not help you get a specific Rate.

Only your asvab line scores will qualify you for a Rate.

It's wierd, the Navy and Air Force give the best opportunities and support for college

But they are the two services that do not give any promotion points for how much college education you have.

You won't become higher ranking because of college as an enlisted, unless you have a 2-year nursing degree maybe. Then you may be able to come in as an officer.

If you are trying to go in as an officer, which has more entitlements and pay than enlisted go here and see what you need:
http://www.navy.com/careers/officerplanner/

I was in the Navy for 6 years and I always wished someone would have directed me in this way. You do not have to go in enlisted and you do not have to stay enlisted either.

The Navy will tell you that you can go to college as an enlisted, but it is ulitmately up to your command and they sometimes have rules that
limit what you can do.

EARN WHILE YOU LEARN

Opportunities abound for continuing education and training throughout a Navy Officer’s career. Navy Officers can continue their education by attending one of the military service colleges to study military strategies, tactics and joint operations with other branches of the armed forces. The Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California is also an attractive option that allows you to earn a master’s or doctoral degree while being paid full-time as a Navy Officer.

Check out the opportunities below to find out which program(s) might be right for you.

NAVAL RESERVE OFFICERS TRAINING CORPS (NROTC)

Earn your degree at our expense. This program offers a four-year, fully paid scholarship worth up to $180,000. It covers tuition, fees, books and a monthly allowance for living expenses.

For a more in-depth look at NROTC, check out our Webcast. Or, check out www.nrotc.navy.mil.

BACCALAUREATE DEGREE COMPLETION PROGRAM (BDCP)

Get up to $155,000 in financial assistance while still in school. Qualified applicants can receive regular monthly income ranging from $2,376 to $4,300 for up to 3 years prior to graduation. This amount includes a generous military salary. A food allowance. Plus a housing allowance that is based upon the location of the school attended. Upon earning your bachelor’s degree, you would then attend the 12-week Officer Candidate School (OCS) in Newport, Rhode Island.

Realize that if you go enlisted and then get out and do you degree after 4 years, you will be well behind your peers who already went to college and you will feel like the old guy on campus. Why not think about getting your degree while you are in by doing one of these officer programs.
