Consequences of Going AWOL?

My friend just went AWOL tonight and i'm really worried about him. He hasn't contacted anyone and I have NO idea what he was thinking! Honestly, you'd never expect this from him. He's in the US military, and i was wondering what the consequences will be for his actions when they either catch him or he turns himself in?

Thank-you!

Well, he is going to be in quite alot of trouble. And then considering WHY he went AWOL, could add more charges. Is he already pending UCMJ? Uniform Code of Military Justice, was he in trouble before he went AWOL? Is or did he, piss hot on a drug screening, more charges.
He should return to his unit. He needs to know that in a few days, there will be a Warrant out for his Arrest, if he gets stopped by a police officer, that will come up, and he will be arrested on the spot. For being a deserter, we are in a time of war, even more charges.

Whatever the reason, he needs to "Man Up" and face the music, if he turns himself in, Some units will ask him if he wants to continue with his Military career, or get out, and then they will chapter him out. I suggest he calls his Platoon SGT, and ask him. Honestly, the Platoon SGT doesn't know where he is, and should answer his questions. I would.

A few consequenses that might result from going AWOL are:
Pay loss
Court martial
Bad record
Dishonorable discharge
Extra duties

It depends on how soon he gets caught. It could vary from administrative punishment to a punitive discharge with prison time.

The sooner he goes back, the better. A day or two should not get major punishment - especially if he says he was sick or something. Under 30 days and he'll draw a week in the brig or something. More than that and it will be desertion and he will have a felony with maybe 30 - 90 days imprisonment plus a bad conduct discharge.

if he turns himself in, if it is a short amount of time awol, then he can expect an article 15, or some sort of punishment short of being kicked out. if it goes longer than, say 30 days, he's looking at a bad conduct discharge after some period of incarceration

Google AR 630-10...this will give you an idea.

Best thing for your friend to do is to turn himself in to the nearest installation as soon as possible. The longer he waits, the greater the consequences. And this will not end...I remember reading an article a couple of years ago where a guy had been AWOL for 30 years before he got caught in San Diego.

Depends on how long he is gone, whether or not he went AWOL to avoid movement (read: deployment), whether he turns himself in or gets caught. Also, it depends on his chain of command's decision on what to do with him.

He could get as little as a counseling statement (basically a written 'you messed up, don't do it again') if he comes back before the next duty day or formation.

He could get an Article 15/Captain's Mast/Nonjudicial Punishment if the unit decides not to push it any further.

He could get court-martialed, which could result in a Bad Conduct or Dishonorable Discharge.

He needs to voluntarily return as soon as possible. If he can, contact an attorney with Military Justice experience or a Trial Defense Attorney--maybe they can help negotiate a "plea bargain" for his return. http://usmilitary.about.com/od/justicelawlegislation/a/awol9.htm

If he goes to this site: https://www.jagcnet.army.mil/85257372006BBDCC/(JAGCNETDocID)/HOME?OPENDOCUMENT, then he can find the number for the nearest TDS office.

Ducted pay for a month, plus he's gonna do extra duties, less security access, and be the cleaning *****.

Kick him in the balls and call him a ******* *****, and ask him why the **** did he join up if he was gonna run away

Any law enforcement agency he comes into contact will arrest him. The military police will then make arrangement for transportation and he will be returned to a base near where he is detained, whether he turns himself in or not. When he is again under military custody he will have some sanction imposed, it can range from base restriction to brig time and an other-than-honorable discharge (either Bad Conduct Discharge or Dishonorable), which will get him some brig time, forfeiture of pay and allowances, demotion if he has any rank, and eventual loss of all military benefits includes the GI Bill in the future. Since we have active duty personnel in foreign conflicts, if he was scheduled to go to an active combat zone he could be charged with desertion. Convince him to turn himself in, take his lumps, and do everything he can to return to active duty. This can really screw up his future. And if you know who he is staying with they are harboring a deserter and can be charged with a number of offenses also.

He needs to get back as soon as he can. There will be hell to pay! With any luck he might be able to eventually get out with something better than a dishonorable discharge, ie. administrative, other than honorable, etc. Not holding my breath. The longer he's on the run, the worse it is. The problem with a dishonorable discharge is that it affects the ability to get a significant job for the rest of his life!

I'm a 11 year Navy vet - I wanted to get out soooo bad well before I was able to. But there is a commitment made when you enlist, or reenlist. Time to live up to it!

Yeah depending on when he gets back to his unit...The longer he's away..the worst the punishment will get when he gets back. No doubt he'll get some kind of punishment when he gets back no matter what(extra duty, loss pay, etc)..But he could get the worst(going to jail) if he's away long enough.

Tsunami
they will catch him and he'll most likely have felony on his record its stupid to do this cause it pretty much ruins your life and you volunteered also so why do this. its not good and they will catch you they watch and go after you and then he will be in the brig for abit could be several years and then out but you can't vote and hard to get job especially with locals cause they cant' stand someone like that. its very sad and stupid. i used to work in MPf AND that is the dumbest thing a person can do.

COURT MARSHALLED!!! :-0

He will go to jail, then have to serve the rest of his time in the military that he misses because of it when he gets out. If you hear from him or anyone does, tell him its best to just come back. Yeah he may not get caught, but he will live his life in fear. If he so much gets caught speeding he is screwed!

The Mad Scientist
court-marshal leading to dishonorable discharge. In turn, he won't be able to get a job.
