Could Forrest Gump and Bubba be U.S. soldiers?

During the Vietnam war a person had to have an IQ of at least 82 but because of the draft and the high demand for cannon fodder some were taken that might not have met that criteria. IQ = 100% x mental age/chronological age. It was also OK for young men to go into the service at age 16 and many, I served with a couple, went in to avoid going to prison. The answer, absolutely. Why penalize people that are not very bright and not allow them to proudly serve their country. You know, point, sight, shoot was not as technical as it is today.

Yes. there is an entrance exam for all military branches and as long as they pass it with a certain score they would be accepted.

Forrest Gump wasn't mentally challenged, and neither was Bubba. Forrest Gump was 5 points below "normal" IQ. And there was a draft. Of course they would take someone like him.

Hell, they could be leaders in today's military and have very successful and long careers.

Man I dont know. It was just a movie, and before that it was just a book. By the way if you get the chance read the book it is awesome. He goes into space and him and the monkey end up on a deserted island and all kind of other crap its funny.
