It's short for Demilitarized Zone - it applies primarily to the area between North and South Korea. Essentially it is the border region between the two countries. |

D= de or not anymore, M = Militarized or Military forces (of any country), Z=Zone or area.
The area between two countries that both military decide/declare as a no fight/kill area.
Supposidly a safe area where neither side will attack or kill the other side.
The area between North Korea and South Kores is an example. Both sides are close enough that they could shoot and hit/kill on the other side. In fact, both sides daily watch and can see the actions of the other side with naked eye or binoculars. |

A DMZ is basically a demilitarized zone, where the UN forces North Korea to sign a cease-fire agreement. It just creates a border between North and South Korea. After the war, Korea remained divided.
