Could you please help me get out of the US Army contract they forced me to sign?

I'm a student in the United States on F-1 Student Visa and I'm a citizen of India. I heard about this MAVNI program in which they hire people in the army who have certain Visas. The recruiter told me that I get to pick my job and will get free school and stuff and it's okay to be openly gay in the army. I told him I did my research and it's NOT okay to be gay in the army. And then when the time to show me my jobs arrived, I didn't even get to pick the jobs I liked and they just forced to to pick something I hated and hid a few pages and three guys including the recruited formed me sign the contract. Not they're telling me if I don't join them they'll kick me out of the country and I will never able able to complete my education here. I can't believe this! Please help! My basic training starts September 2nd, so they want to ship me out then. Additional Details P.S. I don't want losers to tell me that what I did was my own will. I was under tremendous pressure and they tricked me. I just want a way out and be able to complete my school. Please give me positive answers, I don't need bull crap.

I think they used a lot of pressure, but I doubt that they actually forced you...however the fact that you are foreign you may have felt forced. Americans may seem forceful to someone who is not completely familiar with our culture.
I don't know if you are gay or not. I'm not going to get into that one too deeply. You can not be openly gay in the military. If you are gay you can still serve under the Don't ask Don't tell policy which means you can't tell anyone you are gay. I don't know what that has to do with getting a job you didn't want.
A lot of recruiters will use tactics to sell jobs to kids that the person may or may not like. Sometimes someone ends up liking the job and he or she is glad they tried it...other times they feel like they were tricked and hate it.
I don't know about your immigration status or the nature of your visa. I have never heard of being kicked out of the country because you don't enlist. We don't have conscription (draft) in this country. You might have to sign up for selective service but that is a different issue. Even Selective Service doesn't mean that you have to enlist.
My recommendation is that you contact your embassy or Consulate. There are immigration laws and rights that they can help you with. You can also seek the advice of an immigration attorney.
If what you say is true then you should report the recruiter because that is not what they are susposed to do. I have never heard of someone with your problem. Most people here haven't heard of that situation either. So don't feel bad if people give you a hard time. It just sounds out there...but the truth is stranger than fiction. |

EVERYONE in America knows the "Dont Ask, Dont Tell" policy in the US Military. Its no secret, they even poke fun at it in movies.
Also, no one made you sign up, you did it willingly. You are here to get a free education out the United States of America, the least you could do is give something back by serving in one of our military branches.
Dont expect to take something from us, then run back to India. Man up and serve out your contract by "paying it forward."
Edit: I dont care if you are paying for your education or not, you are still here getting an education in a FREE land. So don't be so selfish and give back. This land was built on people that gave to their country so that others can have free rights.
Theres an old saying here in America: "If you can read this, thank a Soldier".
Now quit whining and be grateful you are here; not back in the sandbox worrying about Hezbullah and other terrorist regimes. The US Army will pay your rent, food and education. |

Slow down.....
I am familiar with the program that you are speaking of. Your recruiter is a butt because though they let you in they limit what jobs you can take initially
Did you go to MEPS? That is where you sign your final papers. If not you can say no and continue on with your life. But if you signed all of the papers already it is what it is and they can yank your visa or make sure that you don't get another.
You need more info so you need to call someone over the recruiters head. MAVNI is a pilot program. But they need you for a specific purpose..... you have Indian citizenship and speak the language. So it would be stupid to put you in a MOS where that would not be used.
Do realize though that oft times getting in can just be a try out. If you do well then other parts of the military will pick you up.
The gay thing? If you want to be openly gay that is your business. I suspect the core of the problem is that you even mentioned it. I do as well suspect that the recruiter will get kudos for having anyone join but he knows you will fail.
YOU CAN NOT BE OPENLY GAY IN THE MILITARY. |

Perform a guy act in front of your commander. (Or with your commander). That should get you out pretty fast.
Or break your legs. |

Smoke some pot right before you leave for basic. Pop hot on your piss test at basic, that will get you out.
Suddenly become overwhelmingly depressed and taking meds for it. This all has to be diagnosed by a doctor.
Get a felony on your record.
Give up your visa and go home until after September. Your enlistment is dependent on you having this.
Inform the recruiters CO you are openly gay, take your boyfriend in to meet them, and give a nice big kiss right there. If that doesn't work make a pass at the DS your first day.
There are lots of ways out. Most people just don't like doing them.
I personally think you have just decided against it, and are looking for a way out. I think it's crap, but hey each to their own.
By the way everyones contract is 8 years. Not all 8 are active. Look at what it says for active time. The years that are not are IRR. This means they recall you if they have to. |

Run...run fast and don't look back. There is no way for you to get out of it. Once you sign your name, you belong to them. Finish this school yr, then go home and apply to school in the UK. Much nicer country all the way around. |

Do you have a pre existing medical condition?
( that's one way to get out.)
You could fail your physical they give you ( have you done that yet?)
because before you sign that paper, they can promise you anything you want to hear, but when you do sign, it turns into something completely different.
if it is wrong to be openly gay in the army ( I didn't know that ) but I would then make it a point to tell everyone who would listen.
Or, you could try and report the recruiter somehow.. |
