It's firing a larger and heavier round, so in principle, yes.
The whole point of the US adopting .45 ACP was as a man-stopping round after some disappointing experiences using .38 against the Moro tribesmen of the Philippines. These guys were pretty fanatical and wouldn't go down easily, showing that a heavier calibre was needed to do the job. The British had much the same experience in their colonial wars against Zulus, Dervishes and other powerful enemies which led them to use the .455 revolver cartridge as standard.
In any case, the Thompson was also a more robust and reliable weapon than the MP40 or the Sten, both of which had problems with their magazines and ammunition feed. |

The Thompson was chambered for .45 Cal. It fired the 45 ACP round. The German weapon and the Sten were chambered in 9mm Parabellum. The 45 vs. 9mm stopping power debate continues today. I think 230 grains of full metal jacket moving at 850 ft/sec has more stopping power than a 9mm Parabellum. |

Yes, it was a larger caliber round with more 'oomph' although it had a slower rate of fire |

Ah the classic sten gun, many a happy time i had reading commando comic "take that fritz" as our hero Tommy let loose with his sten gun showering a whole platoon of Jerrie's with lead. The mp40 favoured weapon of the bosch kraut, they couldn't penetrate a virgin on her wedding night. Oh the hun don't like the sten up them you know. As for the tommy gun i know it was impossible to retro fit for other rounds, the russians tried and ended up making a weapon that gave of more smoke than an unlicensed taxi being driven by an illegal immigrant. Stopping power? its all down to tonnage or pwnage. Which weapon had the most kills, when i play medal of honour i always go for the mp40. 38 confirmed kills in a free for all, ping rate of 70ms. I deserve a medal for my heroism |
