Well the communists ended up taking over south vietnam...our objective was to keep that from happening...I'd say it was a loss

you decide a win or loss by the acheivement of objectives. The objective in Vietnam was to protect the democratic south from being conquered by the communist north. Vietnam is now a single communist country...so, you lost. However, many would argue that it was a civil war and America was not there to fight, but as a police action and never declared war. so technically, you can't win or lose a war you never "fought".

we didn't achieve our objective. Wars are won by a opposing army giving an unconditional surrender. We never had a clear view of what our enemy was. Communism? It was much deeper than that. Civil War? somewhat. I pedict a similar outcome in the mid-east. unless we can come out and say "We are at war with all Muslims, and must kill them all unless they surrender" we will never achieve a peace and trust that can be built upon.

We lost Vietnam by Nixon cutting and running! It had nothing to do with the kill ratio, and body count, but neither is the basis for the winning or losing a war. Most of that is pure government!

I have to respond to the poster that said "Nixon cut and ran" or something to that affect.

It was the democrat congress that cut funding to the military and cut aid to south vietnam, allowing the north to invade again and take over...

And so we lost...

this is my partners profile im a guy lol..well not to be rude but vietnam was lost not won the last operation the u.s carried out was operation baby lift in 1972 its objective was tool evacuate several civilan and military placements ending the war i think that the S.L.A and similar paitriot militia civilian organisation got to the goverment of the u.s due to there lack of concern for the mounting casualty rate also the vietcong were to rooted into the civilian population and larger landscape to defeat plus with a steady weapon supply from the russian military and a large cashflow from large coccaine sales to the u.s thus powerd by itsown enemythe war not one but lost .........................

The US Lost in Vietnam as indeed it will lose in Iraq and the entire Middle East. Its not an outsiders War & in no respects whatsoever should the US and its Allies be even remotely military active in the M.E.

The kill ratio evidently wasn't decisive - neither was the strategy of fighting a "police action" in the south for over ten years.

Blame the "Hippies" and the "Media" and the "Government" all you want, but no one wins a war by fighting a purely defensive battle.

Why do so many Americans have a problem to accept that they got
beaten in Vietnam. You hear excuses like it was not a war, our
kill ratio (what a sick word) was much higher. Fact is that the
Vietnamese won the war because they fought for theyr country, they
used clever tactics and they knew why they are fighting. The Americans tried the usual way, modern equipment, lots of bombing
and even the use of highly dangerous cemicals which caused many
Vietnamese and many American Soldiers to suffer for ages.

It makes me brain fry just trying to answer this, but since our objective of the Vietnam conflict was to stop the NV invasion of SV, and they did take Saigon, so pretty much we lost the conflict. Most will say it wasn't a war since it wasn't sanctioned by congress, and it doesn't count as a lost war for the Red White n' Blue.

Did America win in Vietnam ? It is a moot point..... but one thing is positive ....the American military was not defeated in South Vietnam. The American military did not lose the Vietnam War !!

We went to Vietnam to help stop the spread of communism is SE Asia. Our role was to advise and assist the South Vietnamese government in resisting a communist insurgency.
All American combat troops left South Vietnam on 29 March 1973
We turned the defense of the country over to the South Vietnamese military. The North Vietnamese conquered South Vietnam on 30 April 1975...... The American military had been gone for two years

HOW CAN YOU LOSE A WAR WHEN YOU ARE NOT THERE ?

Did we win?...... Depends on who you ask. Many countries (ASEAN) in SE Asia feel we did help the stop the spread of communism.... The Thailand was able to stop their communist insurgency. The Indonesians threw the Soviets out in 1966 because of America's commitment in Vietnam. Without our commitment to South Vietnam, Communism probably would have swept all the way to the Malacca Straits that is south of Singapore and of great strategic importance to the free world. If you ask people who live in these countries who won the war in Vietnam, they might have a different opinion from the American news media. The Vietnam War was the turning point for the world communist movement.
Even today South Vietnam is friendly to America and refuses to strictly adhere to the guidance from Hanoi.

BTW Dispite what Walter Cronkite and the American media reported......The 1968 Tet Offensive was NOT a surprise and NOT a defeat of American forces. We were ready for them and we destroyed the combat effectiveness of the Viet Cong....they never recovered ......I know.....I was there

well, north Vietnam won of course :). the USA and south vietnam gave up.

and you didnt change a **** except for killing a bunch of people, distroying their villages and giving them the dangerous agent orange that still shows up in some people even today.

we sure as hell didn't lose...but we didn't win either since communism prevailed due to the hippies.
