Many will tell the marines are better, but each one is the best on its way.
The Army is the military branch responsible for land based operations, they´re trained to perform operations in land. Besides, its the largest branch of the 5 branches with more than 500,000 soldiers in active duty.
The Marine corps on the other hand, is the only branch capable of acting by itself, cause the have their own transportation, warplanes, tanks and the operate with naval forces. Is the smallest military branch but also the hardest to get in, cause of their high discipline and physical standards.
They´re also acknowledged as the more prestigious military branch of the US. hmm and i think their dress uniforms are nicer than those of the Army.

Two entirely different branches of the military. Marines fall under the Department of the Navy, and the Department of the Army is it's own entity.

To put their differences one way... Marines are designed to be a quick strike force. They go in fast, destroy the enemy, and take over an area. The Army as a whole is more designed for large, long term occupation. The Army is well suited to hold vast expanses of territory, and keep it secure.

The Marine Corp also puts a lot more emphasis on building every marine's ability as a top-notch fighting machine. Marines train harder in physical fitness, hand to hand combat and shooting skills than the average Army soldier. There are elements in the Army that place heavy emphasis on those skills, but as a whole, on the average... the average marine is going to be a cut above the average soldier. To keep this rigorous standard though, the Marine Corp remains a smaller body of personnel, unlike the massive presence the Army brings to the field.

they are similar in that they both pretty much have identical MOS's (infantry in particular). And both basic training/boot camp are physically/mentally intense (marines are said to have a little bit harder but both equally difficult)

The difference is in their missions,

the army is used as the main fighting force except when they get control over a territory their duty is USUALLY to stay their and secure that area; set it up so it can operate on its own, talk to the locals and make sure they get what they need. They generally have longer deployments than the marines.

The Marines are technically part of the navy(but shouldnt be confused, as they are usually a land-based force). Their mission is to basically be shock troops. They go into hostile territories, eliminate the enemies, and move on to the next hostile area. Marines usually have shorter (dont confuse this for short) deployments due to their intense workload.

I'll simply put the answer with little elaboration as possible:

U.S. Army are the heavy infantry (as a 'whole', not the minor assets within the Army [e.g. Rangers, an light infantry unit]) strictly responsible in ground warfare. They are mostly responsible in operations 200-miles inland and mainly used as an occupation force that can sustain combat for more than 6-8 months.

U.S. Marine Corps are (as a 'whole') the light "naval" infantry that are responsible in expeditionary and amphibous warfare. Heavily depends on the navy; can't be expeditionary without the U.S. Navy. Marines jurisdiction is at any littoral region that is accessible to the Navy. Marines's operations are from the beaches to inland about 200-miles. Since they are made to be versatile and mobile, they carry enough weapons and gear that can only sustain them for 6-8 months maximum before depleting their resources.

'Marine Corps' is latin for..."a group of seafaring soldiers" [-related to the sea]

Never mind the first dummy that answered your question. The marines are all trained infantry type. The Army separates the combat arms from the support personnel. In the Army combat arms are trained to a higher standard than support personnel. The Army and the Marines fight whether foreign or domestic. The Army is the largest of all the five branches and the Marine is the fourth largest branch. There is no difference in what their duty is to the United States and only someone who is lacking in knowledge would tell you otherwise.

I've never heard of the American Army?
The United States Army goes all over the World and does much the same thing as the Marines. The Army is more self-sufficient being able to make a place a home without any help.
Marines are called Marines.
Members of the United States Army are called Soldiers.
Your question is confusing too, a little bit.

US Army says "Hooah" and US Marines say "Oorah" and that's the difference between them.

American army is expert in fighting over the lands while Marines deal with water. The purpose for both is the same; "JOIN FORCES,GO EXOTIC PLACES, MEET DIFFERENT KIND OF PEOPLE AND KILL THEM!"

American army works for protecting America and stays in America.

The Marines go overseas into foreign countries, and fight in foreign countries.
