Difference between soldier and officer?

I have a project for Social studies about the civil war. What's the difference between a rank-and-file soldier and an officer?
like how was the uniform, accessories and equipment worn or carried different?
Additional Details
during the civil war? not now!

A soldier is anyone in the Army. An officer is one with higher rank and more authority than enlisted personnel.

I don't think I would use Yahoo answers for a project. Do some other research online or at the library. You may not get 100% accurate information here.

Officers give orders, Soldiers do all the work

Pat
Officers are mostly useless since SNCOs and NCOs do 99% of their work, but they make the policy decisions and take phone calls from their "office" (golf course.)

Soldiers are mostly useless because they're in the Army and can't complete a single objective without relying on everyone else to overcompensate for them.

But both are generally useless.
