They have been employed.
One of the main reasons we don't see it every day is that it is very, very difficult to handle the material (especially radioactive) to make a dirty bomb without killing yourself - and real bomb makers are hard to come by. It is difficult enough to make improvised bombs without hurting yourself already.
The second reason is that especially radioactive dirty bombs are fairly easy to detect. There are detectors in every major city and port that will pick up even a faintly radioactive source. This makes it very difficult to move a radioactive dirty bomb into a high-population area without getting caught.
Biologicals don't really survive that well in explosions - hence you don't really hear much about them being used in 'dirty bombs'.
Chemicals have been employed more than any other type of dirty bomb. Good, effective chemicals that can survive the explosion from a bomb are hard to come by though.
Also, like someone else already pointed out - they don't work that well. Explosions and heat aren't a good way to spread out an agent.
And to the people that say dirty bombs don't exist or are part of some propoganda ploy: Educate yourself with a little modern history on terrorism/insurgencies before showing how ignorant you are. If it's possible, a terrorist, insurgent, rebel, or bored teenager has tried it. There's nothing magical about it and not everything in this world is part of a huge grandiose conspiracy. |

Mainly because they don't work. The US Department of Energy built and tested several such devices in the 60's and they were considered useless.
The only time radiation is seriously dangerous is when secondary fission particles from reactors or bombs are released. Sources from medical x-ray machines are no good.
That and a bunch of jihadis just got put away for thirty years each in the UK for trying to make one! |

The problem with a dirty bomb is that it is dirty even before it goes off. That is a big risk to those who plan on using one as it could kill the "wrong" people before it is used. |

Because:
1) They are much harder to make than the news media claims.
2) It is much harder to get the materials than the news media claims
3) They are much easier to detect than the news media claims
4) They are virtually useless as weapons. (Due to the quantity of radioactive material required to produce significant casualties over anything other than a an area of a couple of hundred feet.) |

most of the answers are absolutely correct--they don't have the means.
it's also possible that they're concerned about efficiency. considering the cost of getting them is much higher than IEDs, and they're not likely to do the job that many times better? there's no point in it.
there have only been two cases of the existence of a dirty bomb. in 1995 and 1998, chechen separatists reportedly had them, but neither of them were actually used. they were more publicity stunts than they were a threat. |

If a dirty bomb went off a mile away from a room full of people , and one of the people in the room used an eye dropper to put a single drop of petrol in the middle of the room. You'd be in more danger from the petrol fumes than you would be from the dirty bomb! |

even the idiotic fundalmentalists know if ever 1 was deployed here all hell breaks loose in the mideast, consider 4-5 countries gone from our mini nukes, it would put the middle east even farther back compared to todays society standards. in other words they know just how far to push our buttons |

They are not efficient at spreading radiation, it is blown all over the place and is too diffused to do any damage.
It is just US government scaremongering spread by their toadies in the press. |

they do exist and have been extensively trialed - shows how much you lot f***in know
but currently too much explosive is required to create the pressure required to disseminate the "dirty product" to the most effective radius - which will therefore make the ordnance easy to detect
therefore there are much easier methods to use
there is also much debate within terrorist circles on the detrimental effect on the support of "the cause" - probably the main reason it has not been done yet |

Possibly because it is an unwelcome invention of the propaganda machines of western governments. I don't think we should be giving them ideas, but we shouldn't be inventing imaginary threats like the "dirty bomb."
Possibly the "terrorists" (whatever that means) realise that such a device would be too indiscriminate, or maybe we have faulty intelligence, like we did about Iraqi WMD, and the "terrorists" currently cannot obtain such items. And why should they? As terrorism goes semtex and home made bombs and hijacking aircraft are simple and effective from their point of view.
Here in the UK, the IRA used to score points easily merely by SUGGESTING they had hidden a bomb somewhere, even though they were often lying. The knowledge that they didn't always lie about it meant they could get on the news whenever they wished. |
