Do All Veterans Get A Military Funeral?
Find answers to your legal question.

Do All Veterans Get A Military Funeral?

Say a person served as an officer for a certain amount of years but gets out. He then works in the civilian world and dies of natural causes or an accident (not in war).

Does this person have to get a military funeral? Or is it just recommended?

They don't have to, but it's always an option as long as he/she was discharged honorably. My godfather fought in WWII and was in the civilian world his whole life after that. When he died a few years ago he had a military funeral.

All Honorable Discharged Vets are entitled to a Military Funeral.
Some Family's however may decide to not have it in favor of a regular funeral.
Also you can apply to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery if you have an Honorable Discharge and you are approved to be buried there.

It's not mandatory but is a service that men and women have a choice in for serving their country, if their family can't afford the funeral and they were discharged honorably then they can be buried by the military and in some states if you have a plot for them to be buried they will still preform a military burial To serve your country is an Honor and They Honor those who have died and who served honorably while they were in the service.

Maybe, they are eligible for one.

BUT, with the deployments, the US Military does NOT provide an honor guard for funerals anymore, unless the service member died on active duty.

Even for retirees who died of service connected illness's or injures, the active military will only provide Two Soldiers to fold the flag at a funeral.

So if you want a military burial, you have to get either reservist or national guardsmen to volunteer or state militia or Veterans organization members to be the honor guard.

Most funeral home directors, will know who does honor guard in the area you live in.

If they are not an active member of the military at the time of death, a military funeral usually is not warranted.
Certain types of funerals will come with certain military ceremonies for retired military personnel. I am not 100% certain of all the rules.
All honorably discharged veterans are entitled to a flag for the casket; usually, for non-military personnel, it is folded and placed at the head of the deceased.

My Father was in the Navy during the WWII. Would he be eligible for some type of military funeral? His brother who also served in WWII died a week ago---a Naval soldier folded the American flag and presented it to his children at the funeral. It was a beautiful honor and a memorable funeral. When the time comes, how does someone go about arranging this honor?
